Costellos ? Cork
« on: Sunday 16 May 10 16:38 BST (UK) »
My gggrandfather Patrick Costello with his wife Mary came to England in the middle 1840's and appear on the 1851 census and subsequent ones in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. Patrick died in 1875, and Mary in 1894. Their daughter was Rose b c1849 and her daughter my grandmother Theresa born c 1871. Family folklore says that they originated in Cork possibly Black Rock. Can anyone help?

It will be very difficult to pinpoint an exact relative without more precise information. There are no Costellos in Blackrock, Cork in Griffiths Valuation taken in the mid 1800s www.askaboutireland.ie. At present there are no online church records for Cork city/suburbs but there are due to be added on 16th June on www.irishgenealogy.ie
Civil registration didn't start until 1864.

Many thanks Agho. I suppose I will have to expand my search area?

I'm not sure why you would want to expand the search area, if you believe that the Costello family came from somewhere around Blackrock. The fact that they dont seem to be included in Griffiths just means that they were probably not in the area when the survey was taken between the late 1840s and early 1860s. Maybe they had already left for England by then ?

Your best bet is the IrishGenealogy website that agho mentioned when that's updated next month.

Thankyou.. It is a fair  assumption that Patrick and Mary left Ireland in the mid to late 1840's as their daughter was born in Burton on Trent in 1849 and they appear in the 1851 England census. I do not even remember where I heard about Black Rock. I have been unable to run down any family papers. Follower

The problem is that with such common first names and so little information, you could easily end up finding a 'wrong' Patrick and Mary if you widen the area's to search..

was Rose born in Ireland or Engand ?

do you have Mary's maiden name from a birth cert for any of the children ? That could confirm any marriages you may find in Cork parish records.

Follower, is there any possibility that some of Patrick Costellos siblings also went to UK? Sometimes siblings went to the same area and settled near each other. I know it's a long shot, but, you may be able to make connections to other family members and get further info on origin that way - were there Costello godparents for christenings or witnesses for marriages?

Thanks. No idea of Mary's maiden name, or other children yet. Am going to look at England census returns 1851 onwards.
Rose born Burton on Trent, Staffs 1849. died same place 1914. She married Thomas Butt Q3 1876. I've no idea who holds any paperwork.

since Rose was born in England after civil registration started (started there in 1837 vs 1864 in Ireland), there should be a civil record of her birth, and therefore a birth cert - which would give both her parents full names.

I had a quick look at the index on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ and see a possible birth in the right area :

 Births
 Quarter/Year:  Mar 1849
 Name: Rosa Costello
Registration Distrct : Burton On Tr
 Volume : 17
 Page : 11

You can order certs online from the GRO UK
