Henry Hepworth in 1871 & 1861 census
« on: Friday 14 May 10 17:30 BST (UK) »
In the 1881 census, a Henry Hepworth is recorded under the name Epworth at 24 Gorton Lane, Gorton, Manchester (Ref: RG11 3901 Folio 4 Page 2). The family can also be found later in the 1911 census at 9 Leighton Street, Moston. His wife is Esther Purdon and I can find their marriage in the BMD index for Salford, Q1 1879. As they have children older than their marriage, I assume that Henry was married before.

But I have been unable to locate Henry (and his wife) in the 1871 or 1861 census. Neither can I find the births of their children William, Benjamin or Edith in the BMD indexes.

Any help information or guidance gratefully received.

Thanks,

Ian

Noticed that he was a Cooper in the 1881 census: may be a red herring, but this chap in the 1861 census for Manchester is also born c1841/2 in Hull - and a Cooper too.

RG9; Piece: 2957; Folio: 34; Page: 5 Manchester

Henry Dundsworth 19 Boarder born Hull a cooper

sadly its not a mistranscription - keep it on the back burner  ;)

Surname spelling - see later 1851 census.

Hiya Ian....on www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html   all events - Hepworth brings 125 matches ...have a trawl through them and see...for instance there is a babtism and then a burial for a George Henry Hepworth aged 2  in 1866 in Blackpool...father Joseph  mother Margaret...NOT your Henrys but if you take the time to go through them all you may find your Hepworth connection...good luck...allan ;)

oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

The older kids (the 2 boys at least) are Esthers from a previous marriage

See 1871 RG10; Piece: 4030; Folio: 99; Page: 24 - surname Pinder or prob Purdon from a submitted correction. Which matches the name of 'Mum' on the 1881 census you mentioned

Here's Henry in 1871

RG10; Piece: 4048; Folio: 56; Page: 52 Manchester, Railway Street, 6 Allen ?

Samuel Hepworth 79 Head Widower born Yorks, Hull: Boot & Shoe Maker
Samuel Hepworth 27 son born Hull: Railway ? Maker
Henry O??worth 29 Grandson born Hull: COOPER

not 100% about the 'Grandson' bit, its a squiggle before the word son.

next door is a M Purdon age 47, Coopers wife born Hull - looks very much like the older lady in 1881 ?

Looks like that 1861 was correct after all, I've looked and Henry was living with the same PURDON family.

1861 RG9; Piece: 2957; Folio: 34; Page: 5 - 57, Reather Street

Benjamin Purdon 35 Head of Household born Hull: Cooper
Mary Ann Purdon 36 Wife born Hull
Edwin Purdon 17 son Cooper born Hull
Henry 'Dundsworth' 19  ditto ditto

No real clues from the old chap Samuel in 1861

RG9; Piece: 2957; Folio: 13; Page: 22 Manchester (same address)

Samuel 'Epworth' 67 Head of House born Hull: Boot and Shoe Maker
Mary Epworth 65 Wife born Yorks, Beverley
Betsey Epworth 29 dau Hull
Willm Epworth 28 son ditto: Boot and Shoe Maker
Samuel Epworth 17 son ditto: Oil Sheet Maker

I was beginning to think they might be on the unfilmed 1851 Manchester, but here they are still in HULL:-

HO107; Piece: 2363; Folio: 139; Page: 45 Kingston upon Hull, Myton - 62, West Street

Samuel Epworth 54 Head of Household born Hull: Shoemaker
Mary Epworth 53 Wife born Yorks, Beverley
William Epworth 20 son born Hull: Shoemaker
Samuel Epworth 7 son ditto: Scholar
Elizabeth Epworth 25 dau ditto: at home
Benjamin Ounsworth 42 Lodger WIDOWER born Hull: a Currier
Henry Ounsworth 11 Lodger born Hull: scholar

now, the spelling of Henry's surname in 1861/71 makes more sense!

Looks like he was sort of adopted?

but 1841 is odd!

Benj 'Holdsworth' is probably the Benjamin on the above 1851. But then on the 2nd page at William, it switches to Hepworth again!

HO107; Piece 1231; Book: 10; Civil Parish: Holy Trinity; County: Yorkshire; Enumeration District: 17; Folio: 23; Page: 38

all state born in County

Sam Hepworth 40 Shoe Maker
Mary Hepworth 40
Mary Hepworth 20
Benj Holdsworth 34 (no occupation shown)
Betsy Holdsworth 19
Eliza Holdsworth 17
Wm Hepworth 12
Maria Hepworth 7
Henry Hepworth 2
Warpes Grane 30

so is Henry really a Hepworth after all? or is the order in which its written incorrect?

It may be that the 1871 is correct, and Henry is a Grandson, if Benjamin O'worth married a daughter of Sam's ?
