Miners Convalescent Hospital

There is a miners' convalescent home here in Bournemouth, I think it was for the South Wales area. As a slight digression the NUM, in common with several other Trade Unions also ran holiday camps for their members, the Derbyshire Area had one at Skegness. In the rail industry the Convalescent Homes were run more independently, but there was a strong input from both the Management and Unions into them.

most promising. I live not to far away from Somerset RO so will go and check this out.
I usually have to travel to Staffordshire to research my family history, so this will make a
pleasant and much shorter excursion.

Hi .. i have just been reading about your interest in allandale miners convalescent home in Weston-Super-Mare and thought I'd drop you a quick line to tell you about the Museum of Cannock Chase in Hednesford, which is a small museum focusing on the Staffs coal mining industry - I think they have a couple of photographs of 'Allandale' which you may be interested in (I think you might be able to get copies for a small fee?!) Hi, no problem - if you want to view the photographs you would need to make an appointment with the 'collections officer' though as the research room is only open part time, kind regards Alison  ps:  think they are internal photographs (?) - I think thats even better than an external view from a family history point of view?!!!!!

As i understand it, miners convalescent homes were subsidized by the NUM and the British Coal Board (pre-privatisation of the coal mines). Sadly many have been sold off
