how do I go about tracing a Scots Guard?

Can anyone tell me how I can trace someone who was in the Scots Guards. I am trying to trace my grandfather without a lot of joy but I know he was based at Wellington Barracks in London in 1924 when he married my grandmother and I have his number but other than that I can find nothing on him. Any advice would be gratefully received.

I'd suggest contacting the Guards archives department in London - they may well have the details of your grandfather on file still. If you can't find their address you could probably get it from your local Army Recruitment Centre. Worth a try anyway!
Don't have one yet.

The above is a good suggestion - the guards have a good reputation for helping relatives - donation usually required ?
Did he serve in WW1 ?
If so try "Researching a Soldier" at

thank you to you both, I will try that and no he was in WW2 but not just for the duration of the war he was a career soldier. He married in 1924 aged 22 and was in the Scots Guards until at least the end of the WW2.

Hi Jean,
Did you find out the info that you were looking for?
My grandfather was also in the Scots Guards at the same time as yours. My grandfathers name was George Cowell b. 1902. I think I have some photos somewhere of him and his regiment.

Granny,
Try Scots Guards Regimental Headquarters
Wellington Barracks
Birdcage Walk
London SW1
I got a full run down of my fathers military history (Coldstream Guards) for free.
