An update!
The "wrong" JW Hughes was living in Port Erin, married to Catherine Jane, and died in 1955.
He was a newsagent (fined 10s in 1941 for failing to display a licence!) and an organist, who played at many funerals - so lots of mentions in newspapers!
The JW Hughes we are looking for is proving elusive, as I can't find him in any newspaper reports at all!
There are no Kelly's (or similar) directories between 1907 and 1955.

And no Electoral Voters Lists from 1919/1920 until 1950!
(or at least nothing available at the Museum)There are a few reports, over the years, of embezzlement by employees of Alderney Dairy - all milk-men, or ice-cream salesmen - but no Hughes.
So I am left to wonder if he went back to the UK?
