Chester Parish Records - Holy Trinity
« on: Monday 10 May 10 16:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Has anyone access to the parish records for Holy Trinity in Chester?

I know from the IGI that William Allman married a Sarah Meredith (30 Jun 1833) - I'm hoping that the original records will show his occupation or his age or something else that confirms the other few snippets I've collected on him.

Many thanks

The pre-1837 records for Holy Trinity have all been transcribed, indexed and published in 1914. Fortunately, this is now available as a PDF file which is searchable too.

All I can add is that they were both widowers and the marriage was not by licence. I don't think the records themselves will provide any more info but I'll check tomorrow as I'm going to the History and Heritage centre in my lunch hour.

Was he a shoemaker from Birmingham?  ;)

Thanks for the prompt reply Shep.

The William I'm tracking was a Tobacconist and was made a Freeman of Chester in 1818. I believe he was married twice before the marriage in question - it appears that the previous wives both died young due to childberth complications.

My memory tells me I've come across another William that was a shoemaker but I've not kept any records.

Many thanks again for offering your time - your help is very much appreciated.

There is also a burial record in Holy Trinity for a baby, William Allman age 2months on Nov 31 1830.
His baptism is probably the one on Oct 8 1830 - William son of William and Martha Allman.
No trace of Martha though being buried there that year. Do you know the names of the previous wives?

Hi again Shep,

I have his first wife as Margaret - she died in May 1823 age 34 (St John, Chester). His second wife was Catherine who died Oct 1831 age 30 (St Mary, Chester). All a bit scattered around Chester I know, but the family seemed to live in the Handbridge area.

As usual with this hobby I could be miles out with my findings,

Hi again,
I managed to get to the Heritage Centre lunch time and can confirm that what I said yesterday is correct. The only other additional info I can add is that Sarah Meredith made her mark but William signed. Both witnesses also made their mark and they appear to be 'Gilbert Gerard' and 'Martha Crosby' although the signatures were hard to decipher. No occupations or ages I'm afraid.

Thanks very much for your assistance Shep.

I will now focus more attention on Williams wife Sarah. Thanks to you I now know she had a previous marriage.

Cheers.
