How to find marriage cert for Armed Forces
« on: Monday 10 May 10 09:13 BST (UK) »
Hi

my ggg grandfather 265 Private Charles Brown 52nd Regiment of foot was stationed in Ireland, I have his service records and the entry on the marriage roll in the Regimental Musters, the regiment went from being in Dublin in 1867 to Limerick in 1868 However on the musters roll the date is 11 June 1867 married to Anne or Annie.

Where do I go to get a marriage certificate to give me more information. This is so frustrating and so far has cost me a fortune. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jo

Hi Jo

You actually have two chances of getting the marriage certificate. You can check the regimental BMDs on Findmypast for example. It will give you the regiment in the index. If you get a hit you can order the marriage certificate online from the UK GRO for £9.20.

You can also print off this form - http://www.groireland.ie/docs/MarriageEnglishApp.doc - and send it by post to the ROI GRO with your card details. It cost 6 euros on plain paper.

However you should be aware that the date on the married roll is when he was placed on the roll. It may not be the date of the marriage. You should therefore be a bit vague especially with the Irish GRO. You can say that they were married ‘by June 1867’. I also suggest you get them to look in Dublin only. My information is that they moved to Limerick in September 1867, so mentioning Limerick will only confuse things. The 52nd Regiment moved to Dublin in November 1866 from Aldershot, so you may be looking in the wrong country.

If you have looked at the muster book did you note the ages of any children? This may help to give you the marriage date. Do you know where any of the children were born, and when? If so you should post it. It may be better to discover his wife’s maiden name, especially as she married a Brown.

Hi Ken

Thankyou for your advice, I have all his papers including the muster, no children were noted. I have checked the GRO/ Consu Marriages, Chaplain Returns and also the Ionian to no avail, I did get a regimental birth for his son who was born in Malta in October 1868 however not much is on the birth cert no maiden name and also that the mother was Elizabeth Brown. On their sons death cert it states mother as being Anne Elizabeth Cullen.

I did write to the St Vittriosa Cathedral in Malta and they went through the Baptism and found it, but it again said Charles Brown father, Mother Elizabeth Brown. So which name do I go for Annie or Elizabeth)? makes it very confusing.

You were right in that the 52nd regiment moved to Dublin in November 1866, I did check Englands marriage and still have come up with nothing.

Do you know why this marriage would not have been registered in England?

Thankyou for all your help

Kindest regards
Joanne

Are you certain that your Anne is English?

I found my g-g-g-grandfather's marriage in the ROI. He was a private in the 77th Regiment and was stationed at Richmond Barracks in Dublin for a short time in 1856. The regiment was on its way from Aldershot to Sydney, Australia.
Seems he picked up a wife while in Dublin. He and Bridget were married in the Parish Church of Chapelizod, Dublin as per the United Church of England and Ireland 20 Nov 1856.
