This could be him as age is a little closer to a birth c1797 and only LIMPRESS on the Victorian Indexes.

LIMPRESS John

Thank you Cando, Alison, Sparrett & Dundee - Mr Wimpress is getting to be an interesting person!  Back to his wife's death reg -  John is only mentioned as the 'undertaker'.  She's buried at Sandy Creek - which I'm assuming is out Stawell way.  Couldn't find any on-line sites for Stawell cemeteries
How did you get hold of convict records at Shropshire, Dundee?  I did a search on Old Bailey, but came up with nothing.
Many thanks for your help.

You don't think the death registered under the name LIMPRESS could be a mistranscription?    I wonder where this person died?

Thanks for the cemetery sites, Cando. I'm still a novice at this game!  Will check out Limpress next time I'm on the Vic BMD site.
Cheers!
PS  They certainly didn't muck around with sentencing back in those days, did they?

Hi
I agree with you Cando that the JOHN LIMPRESS death in Victoria would be worth following up.

Lochlass, I think Cando has given you all there is to be seen on the VIC BMD site without taking the next step.

You would need to get the certificate for further information.

If you have not done so before, you will find a download relatively inexpensive and not too complicated.

Sue

If John WIMPRESS is your ancestor you can now claim to have some "Australian Royalty" in your tree ;D

I have received excellent help from the Stawell Biarri Group.

I noticed on the Tarnagulla [Sandy Creek] website a cemetery index but it only appears to be for deaths post 1890 or so.

If you decide to purchase an image of the certificate just bear in mind that the information on death certificates is only as good as the knowledge of the informant.  There may not have been any family around to act as informant and the information may be far from accurate as his wife died in 1859...and this death is 18 years later.

Don't hesitate to ask for further help if needed.

Cheers

My treats are the phone calls from my adult children who live quite a distance from me.  I often relate the tale of my first Mother's Day....our first born was only 7 months old and I thought I would probably be enjoying breakfast in bed and possibly a small gift....when neither eventuated my darling hubby said with a big grin....but you aren't my mother. ::) ::) ::)  So you can guess what he received for his first Father's Day :P

Ruth it may be worth asking the Stawell group if they are aware of an early Sandy Creek Cemetery.

Cheers
