Granny Problem!
« on: Friday 07 May 10 11:11 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Im just wondering if anyone could shine a light on another problem Im having. My G Grandmother was born in Dublin, the eldest of 3 and in 1911 was 8 years old. However on the census she is not with her mother and sisters she is with a farming family in Galway. Her father had abandonned her mother a couple of years earlier but she has the two younger girls with her in Dublin.

The farming family have no connection to my GGrandmothers family (that I have found yet) so I'm a little bit in the dark as to why a child would be sent away at that age. She came back to Dublin a year or so later but never mentioned her time in Galway.

Anyone any ideas why this would have happened? I played with the idea that her mother couldnt cope but then surely she would have needed her to help with the two younger ones.

Sometimes if a child was unwell they might be sent to relatives or friends (or even relatives of friends) in the country for fresh air, etc. Remember that the census is showing only 1 night and the child might just have been staying there a short while.
