naunton, worcs

Hello
My family lived in Naunton, near Ripple, from 1922. They ran a shop, which closed in the late 1960s. The house they lived in was several hundred years old. I wanted to be nosy and have a look at who had lived there before. My problem is that I can't  find Naunton on any census at all. It doesn't really have street names - possibly just Green Lane? Don't know if it counted as part of Ripple - I know my family went to school there and were buried there.
Any help will be gratefully received!

Naunton seems to come under Gloucestershire, registration district: Stow on the Wold, Sub-registration district Bourton on the Water.

Hi Pam - thanks for looking. Sadly that is a different Naunton, althuogh they are quite close together. Mine is just near Ripple, not far from Upton. Still can't find it....

Ok, my mistake. I've had another look, and the census records for Naunton come under the registration district of Ripple, enumeration district 6. I haven't checked all the censuses, but 1851 is 6c, and Naunton starts on page 2. Hope this helps.

Naunton appears to be part of the civil parish of Ripple

I’ve had a look at the 1881 on www.familyearch.org and it seems to me that the enumerators called Naunton  “Ripple”, so the 1881 census isn’t going to be much help. You can see what I mean by looking  1881 census for Ripple for  - Clara Page aged 2 born Naunton, Worcester. (Thomas Page Head of family) Public Record Reference RG11 Piece/Folio 223/10 Page Number 4 - and then have a look at a few  of  “the next household” .
If you have access to other census records, then you will need to view the page at the front of the census return book, where the enumerator describes the route that he took, with patience (and a map) you may be able to pin down the hamlet of Naunton that way.

Thanks so much everyone, this helps a lot. I shall start strolling through the census returns for Ripple to see what I can find. Naunton is still quite small, but at least 100 houses i would think, but does not show up labelled on google maps yet. What a place to have relatives!

Hello Kate,

I am coming a bit late to this thread but I also have ancestors in Ripple in particular they lived in
Green Lane Naunton the family married at the Ripple Church.

I have just come back from this village Ripple and its Church is amazing and Naunton and Green Lane
is mainly countryside with a horseshoe shaped lane hard to describe to you but I did not notice many really old houses in Green Lane/Naunton.   As time was limited I did not explore as much as I would have liked
and intend to return to the area for a closer look.

Have you checked Google Street View before if not? Have a look at the following link and drop the 'Orange Man' from the 'ZOOM BAR ' on the left into the map where Ripple is Pinned.
