Did this McGREGOR family emigrate to Australia?
« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 14:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have the following family living in Applecross, Scotland, in the 1841 census:

Alexander McGregor 40
Ann (McLennan) 30 (born 23 Jun 1807 in Gairloch)
Roderick 10 (born 3 Mar 1830)
Mary 7 (born 13 Apr 1832)
Alexander 5 (born 16 Mar 1837)
Christian 3 (born 17 Nov 1839)

I cannot find them anywhere in Scotland after the 1841 census, so I assume they emigrated. Australia is a possibility, because I know that some of Ann McLennan's brothers and nephews went there from 1839 onward.

I am especially interested in a possible death for Ann (McLennan) McGregor, to see if her parents are Farquhar McLennan and Christine McGregor.

Thanks for any help,

Francisco

Mills, Cameron/Falkland Islands
Larsen/Denmark
Larrosa/Argentina & Uruguay

Hi Jenn,

Ann's brother, Donald MacLennan, emigrated to NSW (arrived in 1839).

Ann's nephew, Roderick MacLennan, emigrated to SA in 1867 (I've found his family in Australia thanks to rootschatter's help).

I only have the marriage register for Alexander McGregor, which states he was from Torridon, Applecross (no parents name) and his mention in the 1841 census in Applecross.

Thanks for your help,

Hi,

I've never known of any of my ancestors going to NZ, but after looking at the site you posted I was quite amazed with the number of McLennans there (McLennan is my main line of research).

I'll see if I get any further clues in Australia for this McGregor family, and if I don't, I'll do some research in NZ. I might even find some of my dissappeared McLennans there!

Thanks,

Hi
I've looked up McGregor (Ann) deaths in Queensland, NSW, South Australia and Victoria. There are none with parents Farquar & Christine as far as I could see from 1845 to 1945. The Victorian records showed there were "3 relevant records" but would not let me see them without registering a credit card for $5. The New Zealand BMD shows several relevant deaths but only shows the reporter's names, none of which are useful in current context. If it's worth it to you, look up the Victorian and NZ BMDs and pay to look, otherwise it all remains a mystery. They are not my McGregors, who arrived into Queensland accompanying a huge piece of machinery for a sugar refinery on the Chyebassa in 1883.

Many Scots went to New Zealand because the climate and hilly landscape reminded them of the Highlands. Australia is generally dry and dusty, except on the very edges and the heat put a lot of people off so they changed their minds and went to New Zealand from here.
I hope you make some progress.
Cheers

Hi,
There is a family tree that suggests.

Ann McLennan born 23rd June 1807 Gailoch married Alexander MacGregor 2nd April 1829 at Gairloch and migrated to Prince Edward Island Canada in 1842, died 1846 at Prince Edward Island.
Buried May 1846 at the Valleyfield United Cemetery.

Hi Gerry,

Good find, but you have in fact brought up the heart of my problem.

There were 2 Alexander MacGregor / Ann MacLennan couples living in Applecross at the same time.

I know that "my" Ann was the one born 23 June 1807 and that married 2 April 1829. The problem is: was that the couple that migrated to PEI or was it the one that was still in Applecross in 1841.

The couple you mention migrated to PEI before 1841, because they had a daughter born in PEI in 1840. The other couple appears in Applecross in 1841 and then vanishes.

I am quite sure that the PEI couple is "my" family. But as I cannot find the death records for Ann nor Alexander (they both died in 1846) I'm missing the proof. That's why I'm looking for the other couple, with the hope of finding Ann's parents in her death record, which would confirm which Ann is the one I'm looking for.

By the way: KableWalker, thanks for the information, I'll be taking a look at those records you mention. This search has taken me years and it's time to try all possibilities.

Cheers to you both,
Kiko
