1857 Army records help

wooohoo Im the 1st one on the board 

I have my 3rd Gt Grandfathers Army records which date back to 1857, Im hoping someone can help me as in 1873 he was awarded 3 G.L Badges and in 1877 he was again award 4 Clasps does anyone know what these are as in what does the G.L stand for and what would the clasp be?

Also another question in 1882 he was awarded 5 G.C Pay, what would that be??

I should think the G C stands for Good Conduct. Not sure about the G L. Will have a look around and see whta comes up

the L C could be an abbreviation of Long Service and Good Conduct.

.............The other one for the badges is G.L there is no L.C

The clasps will generally signify a battle he was involved in. It was customary for a medal to be awarded to all participants in a campaign, e.g China War medal. This would then come with clasps signifying the battles participated in, e.g Canton, Taku Forts.

Are you sure it's not LC badges as well? I know the marines used to award GC badges on a regular basis, note they really were badges rather than medals.

Thanks for clearing up the Clasps for me No L C Badges at all, the Long Service medals are of different later dates

He was in the Army not the Marines so there goes that idea but thanks for telling me that as I do have a Marine in the family which helped with the G.C I have on his records

Army records for that time are held at GRO Kew.  I am sure they will be able to tell you.  There is an Army Museum too - several in fact.  Have a look on Google for one near you.

Yes I know the records are at Kew and I give up on the people working there, I have emailed them regarding Army things but they send an email back telling me they don't know and to contact as you have mentioned the Army Museums but even they have no idea. So I stick to this board as I have gotten unanswered questions answered for me

Im in Australia so theres no British Army Museums here
