What I ended up doing (at my significant other's suggestion and with assistance from) was to restore Vista computer back to day before I did bad update instead of following tech from Legacy's instructions (too many places for me to go wrong!).  I was then able to do a successful upload (with my Legacy file open & from the "Legacy Home" tab (which of course had reverted back to time prior to bad Legacy download,  and now have my Deluxe features restored.  In addition, now have a version 7.4.0."39".  Thank you for input.

Now have email from Legacy which I think will resolve the problem and I post the gist here so that others may avoid the trap; apparently Legacy customer numbers are edition specific, so when doing upgrades it is essential to use a current customer number for a successful upgrade, not tried it yet though, but will make a further post if any problems.

Glad I didn't have a problem, I don't understand the answer  ???   I've never been asked for a number, customer number or not, when doing an upgrade and if customer numbers are edition specific, where would you get a current customer number from?

You only need a customer number if you use the deluxe version of Legacy

I have got the de-luxe version, but still managed to download the upgrade without being asked for a customer number.

I think the cause of this Lizzie was due to my doing a clean instal on a new Windows 7 laptop.

all seems OK now.
