WWII Love letter
« on: Sunday 02 May 10 19:08 BST (UK) »
My sister found discarded at an antiques / fair a letter from Donald Edward Blunt dated 8/2/1943, after a bit of research we've discovered he was killed near Desborough on 27/1/1944. He was a Flying Officer in the RAF volunteer reserve. The son of Frank Edward Blunt and Janet H of Harrow.

We were visiting a wedding nearby and visited the grave of Donald Edward Blunt and 2 of his fellow crew members, six were lost on that night on training exercise when their aircraft crashed. It was very poignant to think that less than a year after Donald wrote the letter to Rosa he was dead. No idea of her surname, so it would be nice to reunite the letter with Donald's relatives. Anyone have any ideas on the Blunt's from Harrow?

Bye for now

Donalds mum's maiden name was Klein. His parents married in Richmond in Surrey in Jun 1915.There also appears to be a girl born to them in Hendon in1929- whom, I won't name as she may well still be alive.

It's funny that I happened to read this- I originally come from Harrow and now live in Northants- not far from Desborough.

I'd love to be able to re-unite your letter with the Blunt family.

Will try again tomorrow for more clues.

Regards

Hello Carol8353,

Thanks for the info, I had also posted this on BBC family history board. Some of what you've told me is  confirming that there maybe relatives in the Surrey area. In fact the letter was found in the Merton area, so that would tie in, Richmond isn't too far from there.

Will take it from there. I've never had a PM on rootschat, so will it come through as an email to me?

Thanks again for your time.

Carol8353,

Just to let you know that the letter will soon be on its way back to Donald's family.
Through the information you gave me, my sister wrote to them explaining how she came about this letter.
She was contacted today and it was confirmed that they are the surviving relatives of Donald, and would be more than happy to receive the letter after all these years. They're thrilled.
Its great when something like this happens, I'm thrilled as I'm sure they will be once they read his words

Thanks again

Oh WOW - that is fabulous news. I'm sure they will be thrilled to have it.
Maybe they'll be able to shed some light on the identity of the mysterious Rosa.

Thank goodness for some people with fairly unusual surnames too  :P

Many thanks for the PM too  ;)

Great news you found the family and great news that they are interested in having the letter.  So often you hear that families don't care.
