Moderator comment: this topic split from an earlier thread, as they appear to be two distinct families

Hi,

I have just found Rootschat and have been looking over past correspondence between members.
I have a little information on my family past..and this subject seem to have many similarities.

Malcolm Murray married Catharine MacIver abt 1855...their children - Helen, Daniel ( my ggreandfather ) Kenneth,  Annabella, Murdo, Mary Ann, Robert, Julia, Jessie, Christine.

This some connection here ??

Thanks

McBride - Greenock

Hi kazza

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I'm not sure if there is a connection but if you could say approximately where they married and their ages, it would help to locate them.

This is the nearest family that I can find in Stornoway on the 1861. It might not be them - they might have left the island:

10 Enaclet Street, Stornoway
Parish 88 ED 6 Page 4

Murray
Malcolm, 30, shoemaker
Catherine, 29
Christy, 6
Margret, 4
Ellen, 3
Donald, 1

all b. Stornoway

(Note that Daniel and Donald are synonyms in Scotland. See - http://www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=daniel )

Thanks Gadget,

Seems like i need to more research.

A cousin has research notes that differ to yours.

I do have a living relative in Stornoway who sent me information closer to yours
Feu ( i don't know what this is ) Chartulary for 9 Newton
Mundo Macliver, Shipowner..and there is reference to a Malcolm Murray, Shoemaker.

I'm so confused..i suppose there has been many years past, and as i have just started my research i didn't realise all the similarities.

I will continue slowly, please keep an eye out for me again on rootschat

Thanks
Karen

Hi Karen

The best thing is to work back from what you know and verify everything that has been sent to you.

It's easier from a distance now than previously because you have sites like Scotlands People.

it would have been Murdo Maciver rather than Mundo - was he Catherine's father?

I've done some research on a McIver family who owned a draper's shop in Stornoway. A son went to Edinburgh, Oxford, Aberdeen and then Canada and became quite a famous Sociologist.

Catherine Murray, married to Malcolm Murray, shoemaker-journeyman,  died June 3 1897, Stornoway,  aged 63.

Her parents were Murdo Maciver, Revenue pensioner, deceased and Marion m.s. Macgregor, deceased.

Donald Murray, son, was the informant. His address is given as 40 Holmscroft Street, Greenock

From the info on the other thread   ( http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,453734.0.html ), I think this is your family

I'm a new member...signed-up today!

This line is of much interest to me. My paternal grandmother was Margaret Murray from Stornoway.

I have my father's parents marriage cert.

She was Margaret Murray age 20 (domestic servant). He was Hugh McBride age 21 (mason, journeyman).
They married on July 13, 1877 in Glasgow, witnessed by Robert McBride (groom's brother??) and Ellen Murray (bride's sister??).
Addresses given are 4 Grove St. Glasgow for Hugh and 10 Grove St. for Margaret. Margaret's parents are given as Malcolm Murray (shoemaker, journeyman) and Catherine (nee McIver).

Margaret and Hugh's second son, Malcolm, was born June 9, 1879 at 9 Newton St. Stornoway. I have copy of the birth cert.
Family address is shown as 4 Grove St. Glasgow.

Previous posts show Mundo (Murdo?) McIver at 9 Newton St. in 1861 census.
Was Murdo McIver Margaret's grandfather (Catherine's father) and she was visiting her parents The Murray's who now lived there??

Is Donald from Greenock Margaret's younger brother??

Any further info would be appreciated. I can provide info on my aunts and uncles in Glasgow
