Hello Seaway and welcome  :)

Quote
Margaret's parents are given as Malcolm Murray (shoemaker, journeyman) and Catherine (nee McIver).

This looks very much like the same people that I mentioned in the previous posting:

Hi again

Catherine Murray, married to Malcolm Murray, shoemaker-journeyman,  died June 3 1897, Stornoway,  aged 63.

Her parents were Murdo Maciver, Revenue pensioner, deceased and Marion m.s. Macgregor, deceased.

Donald Murray, son, was the informant. His address is given as 40 Holmscroft Street, Greenock

From the info on the other thread   ( http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,453734.0.html ), I think this is your family

Donald was Catherine McIver and Malcolm Murray's son and your Margaret appears to be their daughter.

Hi Gadget,

Thank you for the quick response.

As I am new to this game, I find it very confusing nailing down people as the ages vary when comparing source documents. I'll get my calculator out later and see what the variations are in ages.

I'm trying to confirm Margaret's presence at 9 Newton St. and positively connect her as the granddaughter of Murdo and Marion (nee Macgregor) McIver.
A Google Map search on this address shows a fairly large home. I have my doubts that it is the original from late 1800's.

Re Murdo as "ship owner", could this indicate that he was a fisherman?

Again, thanks, and if you can provide any help in getting me farther back,
I would greatly appreciate it.

By the way, I'm not 100 years old. I was a late life child as was my father.  :)

Hi again

Will this do for starters:

Margaret Murray states on her marriage cert that her parents were Malcolm Murray (shoemaker) and Catherine McIver

In 1861 - my reply #3 on this thread:

Murray
Malcolm, 30, shoemaker
Catherine, 29
Christy, 6
Margret, 4

Donald, 1

all b. Stornoway

at 11 Enclet Street in 1861

McIver
Murdo, 61, pensioner
Marrian, 64
Jessie, d, 20, dressmaker

All b. Stornoway

Baptism/birth, Stornoway 5 Jan 1829 Catharine d/o Murdoch MacIver and Marion MacKenzie

It might be worth you accessing some of the records on the Scotland's People site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It's a pay site and very reasonable.

Also, family search has many of the records www.familysearch.org and  http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

You will need to get Murdo(ch) and Marion McIver's death certs which will show their parents' names and occupations.

These you can view and  download from the Scotlands People site, previously mentioned, for 6 credits each (=£1.20).
