I am searching for my great grandfather James Tilbrook (born about 1840).  Colour Sargeant in the (I believe) 56th Foot regiment.  I know he was stationed at the Little Warley barracks in Essex for some years.

I think he was stationed at Athlone, Ireland as his oldest daughter, Isabella Jane was born there  circa 1872-73, although I don't have a birth certificate for her, just census information.

James was then sent to India where he and his wife Mary Ann, had two more children; Mary Ann born in Poona circa 1874-75, and Charles Alex, born in Karachee circa 1875.  Upon their return to England another son, William, was born on the Isle of Wight circa 1979.  Perhaps James was stationed there also?

I would love to find out anything about this family.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Hello Mrsk,
I am an absolute duffer and the last person to ask about the military.
There are some rootschatters out there much more knowledgeable than I on the subject.
Open a separate topic and transfer your information, I trust you will receive assistance in regard to your request.
Good Luck and Good Hunting, Renaud  ;D

Hi Mrs K

It is always better to create a new thread than to add to an existing one. A lot of members with experience don’t bother reading long threads as they have usually gone off topic, and become hard to follow.

The good news is that there is a record for a James Tilbrook on Findmypast. It does not give his DoB nor place of birth in the index, so they must be hard to read - http://www.findmypast.co.uk/chelsea-pensioners-service-records-collection-search-start.action

Also, the IGI (Familysearch) are testing a series of new indexes including Irish BMDs (post 1864) and Indian BMDs - http://fsbeta.familysearch.org/s/collection/list

I don't believe the 56th were in Ireland in 1872-73. The battalion was in India 1871 to February 1878 when they arrived back, and were in Parkhurst, IOW until June 1879, then Gosport, Portland and Aldershot in time for the 1881 census. So he may have been in another regiment when Isabella Jane was born. They kept a depot in the UK and for most of the 1870s it was in Warley, Essex. So again that matches.

Ken

Hi Ken,

That is so kind of you to send me these leads.  I will check them out asap.  I can't get past James to go further back without finding his marriage certificate, in order to find out Mary Ann's maiden name.  The pair of them are proving to be very illusive!!  I'll keep at it though.  There must be something somewhere that I am missing.

Thank you again.

Mrs K.

Hi Biggles5000,

I am new to this site (just a few days).  I saw your email earlier this evening, offering your knowledge of military history, but I can't get back to where I saw that!!  If your offer still stands, I would be so grateful.

I am searching for  information on my great grandfather James Tilbrook (born about 1840).  He was a Colour Sargeant in the (I believe) 56th Foot regiment.  I know he was stationed at the Little Warley barracks in Essex for some years.

I think he was also stationed at Athlone, Ireland as his oldest daughter, Isabella Jane was born there circa 1871-73, although I don't have a birth certificate for her, just census information.

James was then sent to India where he and his wife Mary Ann, had two more children; Mary Ann born in Poona circa 1874-75, and Charles Alex, born in Karachee circa 1875, and upon their return to England another son, William, was born on the Isle of Wight circa 1979.  So maybe James was stationed there also? (How come his wife was allowed to go to India with him?  Was this usual?)

I am desperate to find out about this family, but I keep running onto brick walls.  I can't find Isabella's birth certificate which would show her mother's maiden name, I think. I also want to find out Mary Ann's maiden name so I can look back further.  She was born in Armagh, Ireland. I have found the family on the census, but little else.  On the other side of the family I have traced back to the 1400's, but this side is being very stubborn!!  Any information you could uncover would be wonderful and greatly appreciated.
