Hi Biggles5000,
I am new to this site (just a few days). I saw your email earlier this evening, offering your knowledge of military history, but I can't get back to where I saw that!! If your offer still stands, I would be so grateful.
I am searching for information on my great grandfather James Tilbrook (born about 1840). He was a Colour Sargeant in the (I believe) 56th Foot regiment. I know he was stationed at the Little Warley barracks in Essex for some years.
I think he was also stationed at Athlone, Ireland as his oldest daughter, Isabella Jane was born there circa 1871-73, although I don't have a birth certificate for her, just census information.
James was then sent to India where he and his wife Mary Ann, had two more children; Mary Ann born in Poona circa 1874-75, and Charles Alex, born in Karachee circa 1875, and upon their return to England another son, William, was born on the Isle of Wight circa 1979. So maybe James was stationed there also? (How come his wife was allowed to go to India with him? Was this usual?)
I am desperate to find out about this family, but I keep running onto brick walls. I can't find Isabella's birth certificate which would show her mother's maiden name, I think. I also want to find out Mary Ann's maiden name so I can look back further. She was born in Armagh, Ireland. I have found the family on the census, but little else. On the other side of the family I have traced back to the 1400's, but this side is being very stubborn!! Any information you could uncover would be wonderful and greatly appreciated.
