Bate & Beresford
« on: Friday 30 April 10 13:16 BST (UK) »
I'm aware that Cheshire Parish records are difficult to find on line. I have limited info on the Beresfords in Church Lawton, Betchton and Sandbach in the 1700's. Now looking for the parents and next generation back of Mary Bate b. Abt 1778 in Astbury or Church Lawton. She married William Beresford in 1797. I also have Richard Beresford b. 1750 as the father of William. I'm sure that many of the Beresfords in the area would all be related. Any help would be very much appreciated :)

Nigel, the FamilySearch pilot beta site has a baptism for Mary Bate on 10 May 1778 at Church Lawton - parents Charles and Hannah. Astbury is on the IGI, so as there are no hits there this one looks plausible.

Thank you mshrmh! I'll have a look at the familyseach web site for futher info. I'm not sure but I believe that Astbury may cover Chuch Lawton and Betchton? That would fill many gaps in my research. Nigel  8) (Melbourne)

Nigel - as you can see from my profile I'm a little nearer Cheshire than you, but even so I had to look at a map for Church Lawton! They do seem fairly close, and according to Wikipedia Church Lawton was once part of Astbury parish:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_parishes_of_Cheshire
Astbury did cover a big area, particularly before the growth of Congleton - GENUKI has details:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/astbury.html

As ever which parish covered an area will depend on date, so you may end up with a couple fo different parishes, even if the family didn't move.

There's photographs of both churches on these links

Good Luck!

Hello again mshrmh, Thanks for the info on Parish Records beta site. I also managed to find the marriage of my 4th Great Grandparents Charles Bate and Hannah Hall in Nov 1764 and many of their offspring in Church Lawton. All of which are GGG GrandUncles and Aunts! I feel confident that this is the correct ancestory line back.
