1861 Census for Ossett
« on: Friday 25 March 05 18:00 GMT (UK) »
Any chance of checking the 1861 census for household of Thomas Fozard please? He’s shown on the 1851 at 42 Upper Streetside, Ossett with wife Hannah. I now know, thanks to a reply to an earlier post, that there’s an entry for a Thomas Fozard on the 1871 census at Milner Street and I’m trying to prove that they are one and the same and who is shown in the household – the children are different but this could be explained by later arrivals after earlier ones had left the nest!

Thanks for this. I now have the whole set from 1841 onwards! I'm almost certain I'm looking at the same Thomas Fozard household in 1851 and 1861 but unfortunately the children have changed -  I'm guessing the older ones have left home. If you do have access to the 1861 census and happen to be able to see where Josiah Fozard (b.1843) was at this time I'd be very interested.
Thanks again.

Ooops, You may now find yourself on the horns of a very large dilemma - Josiah is at home with parents - another Thomas and Hannah.   This is a dreadful image but you are welcome to a copy if you wish to decipher occupation. And, there is a Benjamin as well

The choice is yours............................

10 Mill Lane

Thomas Fozard 1819  Ossett, Yorkshire, England Head  Ossett with Gawthorpe  Yorkshire
Hannah Fozard 1820  Ossett, Yorkshire, England Wife  Ossett with Gawthorpe  Yorkshire
Benjamin Fozard 1857  Ossett, Yorkshire, England Son  Ossett with Gawthorpe  Yorkshire
Harriet Fozard 1849  Ossett, Yorkshire, England Daughter  Ossett with Gawthorpe  Yorkshire
James Fozard 1853  Ossett, Yorkshire, England Son  Ossett with Gawthorpe  Yorkshire
Josiah Fozard 1843  Ossett, Yorkshire, England Son  Ossett with Gawthorpe  Yorkshire

Does this explain the children problem?

Wait to hear from you

Hi,
I'm new to this site but have been looking for  Fozard connections for a while as we believe Josiah is the father of Fergus who has been causing us lots of puzzles!! ::)
I'd be delighted to hear of anything that relates to these two. Josiah and his 'possible' parents Thomas and Hannah are the furthest back we've got on this line.  There seems to be a few references to Josiah on the internet that may have  mixed his details with another chap called Joshua Fozard- ie wife details, and you know how difficult it is to x-check everything, with record taking, spelling as it was.
I'll be waiting eagerly, although I know this thread is about a couple of years old! Thanks very much

Hi Curioulsynn!
I think I'd have to e-mail you my spreadsheet with misc. information if you'd e-mail me . I too came to a full stop with Thomas Fozard but I have speculated on 3 further generations back (without being able to "prove" connections). Yes, Fergus is somewhat elusive!

Gavin

Hi Gavin,

What a wonderful immediate response, thats fantastic. I'd be very interested to hear all about your speculations relating to Thomas, I've got some of my own where Fergus is concerned.
I believe he married twice, though only one is generally mentioned on the internet, and then it looks like he emmigrated to the USA with most of his second family. The only big IF is whether these are the same man or two with very similar dates and details in the same locations. If it is two men then one virtually disappeared!!No death details etc.
Look forward to hearing more, this is a most exciting day!  Thank you.

Hate to throw a spanner in the works but found the following in the 1860 York Probates

The Will with a Codicil of Thomas Fozard late of Ossett in the parish of Dewsbury in the county of York gentleman deceased who died 20 August 1860 at Ossett aforesaid was proved at Wakefield by the oaths of George Briggs of Ossett aforesaid manufacturer and William Midgley of Cawthorne near Barnsley in the said county farmer the executors.
Proved 09/10/1860, effects under 1000GBP

Could he be your Thomas Fozard?

Thanks but don't think do. My Thomas died in 1873 and I'd be surprised if he had enough estate to warrant probate of a will!
