Hi

I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but I have an 8th great grandfather called William Beard, b 1656 in Rottingdean, Sussex, who marries a Frances Suter, b 1660 in Rottingdean. I can't find much out at all about the Suter family in Sussex. I have my suspicions that there is a link with the Beard's of Sussex and those of Gloucestershire, but as I can trace mine back in Sussex to 1495, I think it would have been at least that far back.

Frances Suter does marry a Nevell/Neville and move to Chester, although this is obviously near to North Wales. But there could be a connection there somewhere. I know that all the Sussex families I mention had links with the iron industry, as does Gloucestershire in previous centuries, there were also iron connections with Wales. So maybe there are Suter links going way back too.
Don't know if any of this is anymore than just interesting, but you never know what may be of help!

Good luck with the search.

I've been away from this site for quite some time because of many family demands.  The patriarch or our Beard family passed away on March 31st, the last of his siblings.

I hope to get back into researching very soon and will see whether any of the suggestions given by Bilge and Red1975 pan out.  I will certainly post any results here.

I have information on the Suters that I will pass on to Alf in a direct email once I have it organized.

Just a note of warning about SUTERs in South Wales.  There appears to be at least 2 clusters of SUTERs but not apparently connected.  My cluster is located around the Bedwelty, Tredegar and Newport areas but with a few strays in Cardiff and Neath.  They came from the Dorset/Wiltshire border area (Mere/Zeals/Silton/Bourton) in order to look for work in the coal mines and steel mills.  My grandfather was born in Ebbw Vale but the family moved back to Dorset - probably for health reasons.

I don't really have a Florence Suter in my tree that could connect with your Beard - just wanted to save you some unnecessary research effort!  There are not many independent clusters of SUTERs in England and Wales - Dorset/Wiltshire, Sussex, and Nottinghamshire appear to be the main ones.  I have a huge amount of information relating to the Dorset/Wiltshire cluster.

Thank you for this information.  I have been away from the site for some time, because of other obligations, but hope to get back to the research this autumn.

It would well be worth your while registering with this site and looking up Suter's and Beards.

Thank you.  I visited that site some months ago and thought there may be some family connections there.
