Is this Royal Artillery uniform?
« on: Sunday 25 April 10 22:45 BST (UK) »
This photograph is Arthur Augustus Hill born in Battersea in 1876 (or 1873).  He died in 1936 or there abouts (at age 57).  He was my husband's great grandfather.  I have been unable to find an identification for his uniform.  Family does not know where he served or in what capacity.  Someone suggested the chevrons on his uniform identify rank of sergeant.  It has been suggested the photograph may have been taken around 1890.  Also suggested that his uniform may be the Royal Artillery as the photograph was taken by James Street Walker who operated a photo studio in Woolwich, home of the Royal Artillery for 200 years.

Other suggestions were may  be the Boer War.

Any help would  be appreciated.

No, it is not a Royal Artillery uniform.

The photograph shows a Sergeant in a non-Royal, English or Welsh regiment of the line, post-1887.

...Neither praise nor blame add to their epitaph but like it be simple as that which marked Thermopylae.
Tell it in England those that pass us by, here, faithful to their charge, her soldiers lie.

FindMyPast has the discharge papers of an Arthur Hill who joined the Middlesex Regiment on 17 July 1892 aged 19 years 11 months, discharged in February 1900. He was born in Clapham. His mother was Mary Ann Hill, Rashleigh Street, Clapham, which fits with 1881/1891 census entries suggested on this B-G thread http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?55987-Too-many-persons-with-same-name&daysprune=-1

EDIT - he was a Sergeant but was reduced to the ranks
EDIT#2 - he was not a full sergeant, he was a Lance-Sergeant - is that 3 white stripes ?

Thank you so much for this information on Arthur Hill.  FindMyPast I believe is FindMyPast is that correct?  What search did you use to find this information on Arthur Hill.  Do you search on British Army Service Records?

As he was serving after 1920 you have to apply to the MOD. You have to complete a Certificate of Kinship and supply a copy of his death certificate and £30. It is free if his widow is still alive. You should ask for photocopies of his full record. Otherwise they have a tendency to send you just a summary. It takes 6-8 months.
