edward & james walker leeds west riding

Has anyone come across Edward and James , brothers, of Leeds who became maltsters in that city. Edward was born ca 1802, but I have no record of James other than a reference to him in Edward's will in 1871. In particular I would like to identify their parents. Edward married Caroline Bailey in 1829, and died in Leeds 1871. He appears with his family in the various censuses but I can not find anything pointing to his likely parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It may be insignificant, given that Walker is such a common name, but the Leeds Mercury for June 24th 1815 carries a report of a trial of some men accused of stealing 12 bushels of wheat and eight of malt from Samuel Walker, maltster  'of this place' i.e. Leeds.

The Sheffield Independent for August 21st 1830 carries a notice of marriage: 'On Thursday week at Leeds, Rev Wm Pemberton, Wesleyan Minister, Dudley, to Marianne daughter of the late Samuel Walker, maltster of that town (i.e.Leeds)

If you could find a will for a Samuel Walker, maltster of Leeds who died between 1815 and 1830, it might either confirm him or rule him out as the father of Edward and James.

Further to my last post, are you sure it was James who was mentioned in Edward's will? I can find several mentions of John in business with Edward, but not James.

The possible connection between Samuel in 1815 and Edward is looking a little more certain, as Samuel Walker is listed in Baines Directory of Leeds for 1822 as a maltster with premises in Garden Street, Marsh lane and Park Lane. (So the search for a will is now narrowed to 1822-30)
In Pigot's Directory for 1829 there appears to be an entire dynasty of maltsters called Walker (see Genuki info for Leeds), among them Edward and John Walker who trade at 34 Garden Street, so they have at least an address in common with the Samuel Walker from 1822.

Definitely James. I have a good photocopy of the will.  1853 Whites Directory lists the partnership too, and in Garden Street, as Samuel was. [ Thank you] Perhaps John was also a brother. I will take your suggestion and search for Samuels will. Thank you for finding Marianne too.

Three baptisms at the Mill Hill Presbyterian Chapel in Leeds that seem to fit.

John, son of Samuel and Martha Walker of Leeds. Born Feb 9 1801, baptised Mar 22 1801. Fathers place of birth Hunslet. Mothers maiden name Holroyd and place of birth Leeds.

Edward, son of Samuel and Martha Walker of Leeds. Born Jan 7 1803, baptised Feb 20 1803. Fathers place of birth Hunslet. Mothers maiden name Holroyd and place of birth Leeds.

Mary Ann, daughter of Samuel and Martha Walker of Leeds. Born July 20 1807, baptised Sep 6 1807. Fathers place of birth Hunslet. Mothers maiden name Holroyd and place of birth Leeds.

Mary Anns baptism year matches with the Marianne daughter of Samuel Walker, Maltster who marries William Pemberton. 
Mary, wife of William Pemberton, Wesleyan Minister, in 1851 census is age 43 born Leeds. HO107/2281/513/13.

This is a little puzzling as Edward appears to have been a staunch Anglican. However he could have made the change later, himself, as an adult.
I think Samuel's will is the key, if it exists. I also need to confirm  a brother James for Edward, who is mentioned in the latter's will. Little bits of a jig-saw...

I now have a copy of Samuel Walker's will written 1819 and proved 1820. There is reference to  sons Samuel, William , John , Edward and James as well as daughter Mary Ann.

Hi there - my Walker ancestors were also maltsters in Hunslet, you may have come across them in Church St if you've been looking at directories, censuses.

My ancestor, Jeremiah Walker had a brother b. 1767 called Samuel, I wonder if he's the one you have the will of.

Their parents were Abraham Walker and Sarah Greenwood.

It's so long since I've been on this site that I've forgotten how it works: I can see your posts, but none of the replies to any of them!

Thank you for your interest Charles. If you search for this last post of yours it should then bring up the whole thread.
It is possible that Jeremiah had a brother who is my Samuel but I have nothing at present to confirm the link. My man named his children William, Samuel, John, Edward and James, suggesting that his own father may have been William.  His only girl was Mary Ann... no living Sarah at least. Still I will keep your family in mind as possibles
