I have received a personal message, but as I am new here I can't reply until I have made 3 posts. Hopefully this will work as number 2.

I am a grandson of William Ambrose Brown McNamara, born in 1882, whose parents were David McNamara and Ellen Sullivan. Grandad Will married Honora Connell and had six children of whom my father was the eldest.

All my brothers are with me at the moment visiting. One tells me that our Aunt Lucy's story was that David came in from Australia, having jumped ship. We have records which show that Ellen Sullivan arrived in NZ either on the "Glenmark" or the "Matako". The info on the 'Matako" comes from an obituary in the Christchurch Press 22/9/1937.

Info re the 'Glenmark' comes from a note written on a copy of that obituary written by a daughter of Jack McNamara, Erica Hopkinson, who was David and Ellen's second son. According to cousin Erica, Ellen arrived on 21 January 1865 having embarked on the 'Glenmark' in the UK on 29 October 1864. Ellen came from County Waterford.

Like you, we have not found an entry point for David or Ellen. I have found in an Irish Census the fact that a Bernard McNamara and a Catherine Quinn both lived in the same road in County Down near Downpatrick which fits too well not be taken very seriously as referring to our great great grandparents.

Hi Brian,

Here is an Ellen SULLIVAN arriving on the Glenmark which is probably the same record that your cousin found.

I can't find any mention of a ship named Matako.

The Ellen on the Glenmark was from county Cork.

Has anyone purchased a copy of Ellen's death cert?  Depending on who the informant was it could contain some useful info, including her parents' names.

https://bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/datacollected/death.aspx

You also really need a more precise place of birth or some other family indicator - there were a lot of Ellen SULLIVANs born in Ireland.  Does birthplace 'Waterford' come from a NZ document?

Hi

I have also so found that same record on Glenmark  Ellen SULLIVAN  is about 21 in Oct 1864 as the age is take went ship is leaving.  she was Cork.
So from this she would been about 1843.

When we look at Ellen Mary SULLIVAN (McNamara) death in 1937 she about 90 so born about 1847 and obituary state Waterford.  but of course which one her 8 children wrote this? was it John? or William? (Brian grandfather) or David? (my grandfather) or eldest Bernard or one four girls?
