GRO Puzzle?

Hi All
I recently ordered two Marriage certs from GRO,i filled in the application forms and included the information i gained from Family Search Both Bride and Grooms names,dates & places of marriage,volume & page numbers,i then got a email from GRO saying that the names of both party's don't match up with there records,has any one got any idea's as to why this would happen

It is possible to get false cross matches especially with common first names.. i.e when the two people on the cert order were on the same register page but not married to each other. There are usually 4 marriages to a register page.

You could try ordering the certs with just one of the names - i.e. which ever you are most certain of, so you can then check the person they married.

Thank you for your reply,i did find it strange as my ggrandad's surname was Wardell ,which does not seem to be commen in Dublin,were as the other Marriage cert was for my other ggrandad Sullivan who's surname is very commom ,i will try your suggestion

Hello,
When I am searching a marriage  for say a wendy jones  and it brings up the four on that page. ( I search on free bmd)....

I then check the births    with the mothers maiden name,  and the following census to see if Mary is married to Fred..
Is that explaine ok... (thick head today)

1.  4 names come up  Wendy Jones - Mary Smith - Tom Simpson and John Green.... (for instance)

2.  then I go to Births of   ******** Simpson, same area, within the next 5 years... and see if the mothers maiden name is Jones or Smith.....

3. I search Census rtns for Tom Simpson with wife Wendy or John Green with wife Wendy... that always helps...

It doesn't work the same way for Irish Civil records as it does for freebmd. When we find possible person on the familysearch Irish BMD index we do not have an option to see the other people listed on the same page. We have to use other tricks to try to find a match - e.g. searching for all Marys married in the same registration in the same year.

Also we only have two census returns to search (1911 and 1901.. and 1901 is not online yet), and maiden names were only added to our BMD index in the 1920s

1901 is scheduled for being online in June but is unchecked so may contain many errors and missing entries

Hi All
It also doesn't help that so many people seem to change there given birth names,last year i was on holiday in Dublin trying to find my grandmother Bridget's birth,everyone new her as Bridget, but after visiting the Irish life centre i found that she was born as Susan,on her birth cert it said she was baptised Bridget when she was in her 60's,

Remember as well within the catholic communion rights the child takes on a saints name and many would then use that throughout life
