News about IGI
« on: Friday 23 April 10 15:26 BST (UK) »
Just received this info in an e-mail.

Quote
Finally, we have it on very good authority (Sharon Hintze, of the LDS
church speaking at the Guild of One Name Studies Conference this
April) that the IGI is going to be totally re-launched in a new format
either later in 2010 or in 2011, with the extracted entries separated
from the member submitted entries.

That's a good move, because I find it really annoying when I think I might have found an ancestor to find that the info has been submitted.

I think this would be the link to it https://new.familysearch.org/en/action/unsec/welcome however after I registered, and acknowledged the email, it seems that it's not yet ready after all, and we are to look for announcements.

It will be useful if all those user submitteds were weeded out, a lot of them annoyed me - especially when finding a marriage of a Joe Bloggs to a "Mrs" Bloggs.   >:(  Just how useful is that!!

Yes that type of thing is useless.  At least the submitted ones that give dates, places and full names can be checked out.

Not sure about having to re-register.  Maybe I'll just wait and see what happens.

I think they also need to make their search engine a bit better like entering just a last name and country rather than have to add the first name as well.

I expect that they are waiting for a volunteer to make the enhancements.  It is after all a free site.

You can search I.G. with surname and country only already- just click on IGI link on left side of search page- think this also works for PRF, etc. if you search on the individual pages rather that basic or advances search pages..
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks.

Is the IGI ever updated in terms of extracted records being put onto it?

This was posted on The Ancestry Insider in July last year:

    IGI Dies Without Fanfare

This week saw another significant, yet unheralded milestone. On Monday the final two temples feeding data into the venerable International Genealogy Index (IGI) switched to the new recording system used by NFS. I assume no new data will be added to the IGI. At an appropriate, as yet undecided, future date, it will be removed from the FamilySearch.org website.[/list]

It goes on to say that it is being replaced with the New FamilySearch, with the extracted and submitted records being separated, etc.

All very interesting.   So who is doing the pilot pages?  I'm surprised that the info on there is not on the normal IGI and vice versa.
