Copy Email Files
« on: Thursday 22 April 10 22:59 BST (UK) »
How do I copy all my email files to my Hard Disk? Is there an easy way where the process can be done in one go. Remember that they are all labelled and in my Archives unlike Windows Mail where I have actual folders.
I do not like leaving them on a distant server if that goes down I will have lost all.

Could you save them as pdf files?  I use some free software called Cutepdf which acts like a printer and I can save them anywhere on my hard drive.

No
Unless someone who is a wizard in computing has found a way then you will have to do it the hard way, like me  :)

I either copy and paste, to word documents, or I forward the e-mail to my e-mail provider where the e-mail ends up on my hard disc.

do you mean using something like outlook?
if so yes http://www.codeconscious.com/outlook-express/exporting-from-outlook-express.html
make sure you backup first to make sure you don't lose, or maybe setup a hotmail account and forward all to it
and again before you do it do a backup on the server

Les,
My emails are stored on the GM server (like hot mail would be). I also have a Windows Mail account (old Outlook Express ~ not plain Outlook).

Each and every document in GM is labelled and in the Archive.
My OE mail is in folders all singles for jo bloggs in a folder and those for work days in another folder. OE is easy enough to put all folders into one and email the lot somewhere. But GM is another story and that is the problem have to move each one seperately........Wo!

I cannot see a way of backing them up either.

By GM do you mean Google Mail? If so, there is a google mail back up tool that you can download from here:

The other option would be to as email client on your PC and set up an imap account from the client and google, if that makes sense.

Margaret, i have a few email accounts and a hotmail one, my Bt and hotmail ones
i have emails in those going back to 2007, and during that time have changed machines and formatted etc
and never lost them, like you i have various folders and in my bt one i can multiple select mails and move, forwarding yes you would probably have to do one at a time.
i did have a GM mail and just checked as i havn't used it since nov' last year and all mails were still there,
but not sure how their archive works as i only used it as a backup,
same as hotmail i wouldn't rely on it for important stuff, if you don't sign in for a period i THINK you may lose some,
but like anything if important backup ;)

or after all my prattling lol as Marky says you can try gmail backup

Hello Margaret,

Quote
I also have a Windows Mail account

In there you can add an email account like Gmail. One of my daughters has her two or three accounts including Gmail coming straight into her PC based e-mail reader. And she has ticked the option of keeping a copy on Gmail.

I don't know the parameters off hand but basically you open Windows Mail and click on tools/accounts/add and follow the instructions. If you look at the properties of your current email account, you will see what you need to know from Gmail.

Now, I have never done this but, try making sure all your mails that you received in Gmail are in the inbox before you set up the account and if you have a guardian angel they'll all come into your pc. You could do the sent ones too but afterwards you'll have quite a mess, I think  :o

However, even if getting the first lot across is a bother, once the account is set up, all mails to Gmail will automatically be sent to your pc.

cheers, falcybe
