died on boat
« on: Thursday 22 April 10 03:38 BST (UK) »
I was told that my great great grandfather's first wife died on the boat to New York from Hamburg in May 1906.  I do not know her name, but my grandfather's name was Louis Elefant.  He was born around 1868 in Galicia and died in Ny in 1933.  I would love to be able to find out what boat they were on in order to track Louis' parents names.  Any idea how to find out?

HI Jamie

You need to press MODIFY and change the first sentence in your question. It does not make sense, and nothing seems to relate to the title of the thread.

I will have a look for Elefant's travelling from the UK to New York. I don't believe there were any passenger lists from European posts to the UK.

Regarding deaths at sea - these are indexed on Findmypast and other sites. You should also check deaths on FreeBMD in case it was recorded when the ship docked. Sometimes 'she died at sea' actually means she was taken ill on board a ship, and died after she disembarked. FindMyPast will only have deaths on UK registered ships.

Earlier thread mentions going to U.S. in 1906-

Jamie, if you fix your first post on this thread we'll have a better idea of what sources you can check, etc.

Would Bertha not be Louis' 2nd wife? Note that children are born 1915 and later. Marriage record seems to confirm this- Louis Elefant m.21 Feb.1914 Manhattan to Bertha Indich.

Hi all  :)

There seems to be a confusion between 2 Louis Elefants.

The one who arrives in May 1906 was born 14 or 15 July 1887 or 1888 - father Isak  still living at Krystynopol at the time of a 1923 passport application. Are we definitely ruling this one out, Jamiemet?

Where are you getting all this information? I have tried to research and can't come up with anything.   He is my Grandfather and Bertha Indich is my Grandmother.  They were both deceased before my Mother got married.  She told me that my Grandfather was married before and his wife passed away. There were no children.   She had to have died here because my Mother told me that when her Father died (the five children were all less than 13) they buried him with his first wife (I think it was Washington Cemetery).  Because, when my Grandmother passed, she could not be buried with him. I cannot not verify any of this information.  I appreciate everyone's help.
