Marriage of Samuel Hillman and Rebecca Colwell
« on: Wednesday 21 April 10 19:54 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone

Would like some information please regarding the marriage of Samuel Hillman and Rebecca Colwell before 1822.
I believe Rebecca was a widow, would like to know her maiden name if possible.
Samuel and Rebecca had 11 children from 1822 to 1840.
Samuel b.1793 Lewes and Rebecca b.1799 Lewes (according to Census information)

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks

Hi Ducie,

The Sussex Marriage Index has the following:

Place: South Malling, East Sussex
Date:  3 Mar 1822
Subject: Samuel HILLMAN, bach
Spouse: Rebecca COLWELL, wid botp (B)

There is no further information when Rebecca is the subject.

The only marriage in Sussex of a Rebecca to a Colwell around the right time is this:

Place: Lewes St. John sub Castro, East Sussex
Date: 28 Nov 1819
Subject: William COLWELL, Cliffe
Spouse: Rebecca NORMAN, otp (Lic)

When Rebecca is the subject her spouse is more fully described as of St Thomas, Cliffe.

The SMI has the licence:

Archdeaconry of Lewes Marriage Licence
Date: 26 Nov 1819
Subject: William COLWELL, b cabinet maker S.Thos in Cliff Lewes
Spouse: Rebecca NORMAN, s St.Johns Undercastle Lewes

Additional information when Rebecca is the subject - both are aged 21+ (so Rebecca's year of birth doesn't quite fit with your census data).

PS

St John sub Castro and Undercastle are the same parish, of course.

Given that the licence was issued late in the year there's very little to worry about in the year of birth discrepancy. I'd say your Rebecca's maiden surname certainly was Norman.

Aged 81 in 1922 makes him born about 1841, over twenty years after Rebecca's first marriage. Nothing at all to worry about - the death is that of a namesake.

No amount of transcription by freeBMD will include the William Colwell who married Rebecca Norman - since she was a widow in 1822 he must have died many years before civil registration began!
