Hi there can some one please help, I have been looking for my family in Australia I have there details of the dates they left and to which location there records are in. I registered with the naa, and one said that I had to go to the reading room in Perth where one of the records is and the other in Canberra said I have to apply to the naa archives to view these records, if some one could tell me how to get any more information, this would be help full. Please note I do not live in Australia. They Departed on the ONTRANTO 23 March 1955, under the Assisted Passenger Migration Scheme. Kind Regards

Crete

Some thoughts

Are you in contact with any family members living in Aust ?

Have you written and asked for information about your family, including reference to the departure ship and date?  Head Office address :
National Archives of Australia
PO Box 7425
Canberra Business Centre
ACT 2610  AUSTRALIA

There are phone and fax numbers for "overseas" enquiries at this page of the NAA's website  ;) and from my understanding of phone numbers, perhaps these may be "local" charges for you.

I'm not sure if there would be an issue with privacy laws but as they arrived 55 years ago, their records may simply be NOT yet examined.  In my experience, it takes up to 3 months for a request to be processed, digitised, and displayed AFTER they first receive a request if the specific records are not yet examined.

Cheers, Fingers crossed,

JM

Agree with JM, the issue is probably more that the documents have not yet been examined (i.e. looked at by the people in access to make sure they're OK for release to the public).  You can make an application for them to be examined, after which they can be digitised for you.  As JM says, though, it can take a little while  :)  Will almost certainly be worth the wait, though, as sometimes these records have quite a bit of info.  If your rellies were assisted immigrants (e.g. "Ten Pound Poms") then there may be further paperwork such as immigration applications that is available through the NAA, so it would be worth contacting their Reference staff to find out what might be there.

Cheers

You could try the telephone directory if you have the name and any idea of where they may be - not too easy if they are SMITH though  ::)
