Gloucestershire 1819 marriage lookup
« on: Wednesday 21 April 10 11:52 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Hopefully somebody can help me with this one.

I am trying to find out which Rebecka Ford b1798 marriage is the correct one for me.i have two marriages for her both in 1819,i have to george watkins 12 sep 1819 rodborough and nathaniel smith 17 july 1819 coaley.the census shows the correct birthplace and birthdate for both Rebecca marriages.

What i need to know if the parish marriage cert gives any witness that might give a clue who the parents are,i dont have accesss to the parish marriage certs online.

        Any info will be helpful

                            Regards Peter

I notice that both are submitted entries which are mostly unreliable and usually somebody else's "guesstimate" of events.  For example:

The Watkins entry shows Rebecca's birthplace as Rodborough - whereas the 1851 census shows her  b Coaley and George b Rodborough

yes i noticed that, the marriages seem correct even though her birthplace is not.the george watkins marriage is confirmed in the Rodborough marriage.i need to know who was the witness at both weddings, hoping one of the family members are there.

Peter,

You say Rebecca was b. 1798.  Perhaps the Rodborough Rebecca's parents moved 5 miles to Coaley after she died then  named another child Rebecca because there's an extracted IGI entry giving her birth/christening as 15/1/1800 in Coaley.  But of course, there may have been two Rebeccas so you have to decide which one is "yours" but it's odd that one in the IGI gives no parents' names.

Some while ago I hired an LDS film of the BT's and my notes tell me that the curate (Thos Thomas) in 1898 and other years only gave totals of bmd's e.g. 1798:-  22: 9 and 17 respectively.  I dare say he had some explaining to do at the visitation of the bishop. :D

There will be no marriage cert you ask about but there might be banns records which usually have witnesses.  It would not be breaking the licence for use of the GFHS CD of GLS marriages to let you know that it contains no Rebecca Ford marriage in the years 1819 +/- 5 so it looks like any submitted marriages in the IGI are fairytales doesn't it?   :D

Regards

Chas

P.S.  Use http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(N-Z).htm#R  for searches, it has no fairytales.   C

Hi Chas,
Thanks for the reply.there was 3 Rebecka Fords born/baptised around the same time in Coaley, two in 1898 and another in 1800,which makes this task abit hard.
I do have the Rodborough marriage on a Gloucestershire cd which confirms the date and is not my Rebecka Ford, one down two to go haha.
Its a shame the curate was abit naulty, makes finding family hard,i dont take much notice of the IGI and like to check things myself.i do use the IGI batchnumbers and what a great site that is.
Looks like a gloucester trip one day to look up the marriage banns.

                           Thanks Peter
