Can Great Gran be fixed up please? COMPLETED, THANK YOU
« on: Wednesday 21 April 10 05:53 BST (UK) »
May I ask for another wonderful restoration  if possible please?

Can anything be done to improve Great Gran in this photo? Unfortunately the original photo could not be removed from the frame.

Many thanks,
Siobhan

I apologize for sounding like a pedant here, but the basic premise of photo restoration is to be faithful to the look of the period, which includes the frame and the tone of the image. This portrait was originally a sepia-toned or warm-toned black and white -- sepia most likely. Its current appearance is a result of the fading blue and green tones. Also, the framing can be an important dating element. Maybe it's not in this case, but it should be retained. The portrait had not been tinted and is in remarkably good condition. From the posted lo-res version, it does not appear to have any major damage and requires only reversing the effects of fading.

Hi 6rtury and welcome to Rootschat.

What you say is true, however the one thing you are overlooking is that the people that restore on this board do so as unpaid volunteers, investing several hours of their time providing a service that would be beyond the reach of many people, if they were to seek external paid restoration work.  Not only that, if we all posted a like for like restore, this board would become extremely boring in no time at all.

With this in mind, I think it is not  much to ask in return for the restorers to be able to express the creativity and show individuality.  The people posting their pics are well aware that they can state their exact requirements regarding the work they would like carried out and if not satisfied, request amendments, which each and every restorer would be happy to make.

I'm all for authenticity and have said as much before, however, this is a hobby and people should be free to enjoy it as they wish.

Cheers
Caroline

I understand and agree totally. I hope that no one took my comments personally. They weren't intended that way.

Carolyn and Caroline,

Thank you both so much for your great work. Love both versions.

Carolyn, I really enjoyed the colour version but can I ask if great gran could have a sleeve on her right arm please?
