date please
« on: Wednesday 21 April 10 04:11 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
it has been a while since I have been here but was hoping some of you wonderful people could help me decide on a date to help me identify who is who in this pic.
The old fellow is definately Thomas Wild, b. 1843, d. 1926, age 83.

Of his daughters, there was:
Maggie, born 1871, edith b. 1874, Ettie b. 1878, and Till b. 1885
then to a second wife he had: Clarice b. 1895, and Eva b. 1899.

I am more than certain the lady is one of his daughters but from all the other photos I have of family I do not think the children are hers, but most likely her grandchildren.

Thomas moved from WA, back to Echuca  after his second wife died, that was in 1923, and stayed with his family there until his death.

Would love opinions on age of lady and children please.

Margaret
So my guess is that the photo was taken betwee 1923 and 1926 near Echuca.

Hi Meg, long time no see :)

If this is a photo from the 1920s the lady is at least 20 years out of date...she seems to be wearing the puffy leg-of-mutton sleeves of the 1890s. The leg-of-mutton or gigot sleeve began in about 1893 and continued until about 1897, getting more and more pronounced. It's hard to see detail in this photo as it's damaged and not much of the dress is visible, but call it about 1895 for a midline. The hairstyle is right for this time period as well, and so is the collar.

Hope you can deal with this little curve  :P :D

Is there any printing on the back?

Cheers,
China

Hi China,
Thankyou, I have to admit the clothing did look a lot earlier to me.
no idea about the printing on the back.
A distant cousin sent the pic to me via email and she copied it from a WA relo.

It may have been before he came back to Echuca, I will try and find some other pics of him and put up.  Might have to be patient, not easy to get on computer these days.

I agree with China, but would expand the range somewhat, 1880s - 1899. The sleeve does appear to be a small mutton cap, the hair style for the woman, the pleated bodice with the brooch at the banded collar, and the fact that the man appears to be wearing a longer coat. Children's clothes are more difficult to date, but their styles worn by these two were common during the late 1880s and 1890s into the beginning of the 20th century.

That's not an 1880s sleeve.

Hello Meg & welcome back.
Have to say this does look early-mid 1890's going by the lady's dress style but that doesn't fit with the ages of the children who look about 6 & 2.
If you took out mother this could easily be around the turn of the century as the girl's dress & hairstyle suggests, also the light cane furnature was becoming popular at this time replacing the heavy Victorian style of previous decades.

Thankyou all for your input.
Interesting that it is around 1895,  I will have to do some investigating and some more calculating.

Thankyou ;)
