Help with birth certificate- Murphy

Since both index entries have the same reference details, I'd say it's possible that the same birth record was just indexed twice - one as Murphy and again as Dunleavy. I've seen similar dual indexing for a marriage where a marriage was indexed under both a bride's maiden surname, and the surname of her deceased first husband. I think it probably means that the parents were not married at the time, and the registrar used both surnames to be sure.

Yes i dont think her parents were married then (they never did marry). I assume they were together when she was born though as registered in mothers and fathers name.

Katherine, don't know if this helps you at all, my grandfather was born Belfast 1903. His mother clearly was unmarried (she was the informant, the name given is her maiden surname, no father listed at all and the child was given her surname). The word 'formerly' was scored out in exactly the same way and I assumed it was because she was unmarried.


Can't advise about why Dunleavy is crossed out except as others have suggested, because she gave the father's name but was unmarried. Think I would contact the register office to see if there is any further information to be gleaned.

Ive had a reply from the registers office:

Dear Katherine
 
Thank you for your email
 
First of all the word formerly is on all certificates with the symbol beside it. This then gets crossed out if the mother is not married and the name is the same as the one above.
 
Secondly what seems to have happened is that maybe she called herself Dunleavy but during registration they made her change it to Murphy as she was not married.
 
So instead of mothers name being registered as Dunleavy formerly Murphy, Dunleavy got stroked out and Murphy was put in.
