Help with birth certificate- Murphy
« on: Friday 09 April 10 15:46 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Im looking for a little advice, my grandmother was born 02/11/1919 5 London Street, Londonderry. I have her Civil birth Record which has no father listed, but has her mother as Annie Murphy. I have ordered Marys birth cert but dont think there is likely to be much further information on that?

Interestingly when my grandmother married in 1975 she has put her father as an Anthony Dunleavy (deceased) and his occupation as having being a taxi driver.

I know that her mother died when she was young and nuns brought her up, i was thinking this was likely to be the sisters of Nazereth?

She was also previously married to an O'Donnell, i think this happened in Ireland (probally Derry) as can find no mention of a marriage between a Mary Josephine Murphy and an O'donnell in England or Scotland, she later came over to live with i think an Auntie in Scotland then settled in Lancashire.

Any ideas on what i can do next in order to find out more about her parents?

Help with birth cert

I have obtained my grans birth cert and am wondering what the following could mean.

There is no fathers name but in the Name and Surname and maiden surname of mother it has:

Annie Murphy
Dunleavy* 1

Formerly

a Factory worker

There is no name for father but on my grans marriage cert it lists father as an Anthony Dunleavy. Im thinking her mother had seperated from Anthony Dunleavy and reverted to her maiden name?

What does everyone else think, any idea?

Was the mother the informant for the registration? It's possible she gave the father's name and her name which were written in before the registrar realised the parents of the child were not married.

Am moving this out of Ireland-Resources (which is for posting resources) and merging it with your previous post on Londonderry/Derry board.

Thank you for the reply,

Yes she was the informant, but there is nothing mentioned in the name and surname of father box, it just mentions Dunleavy below her name then crossed out as if it was a maiden name?

This birth cert is from 1919 but when my gran married in 1975 she lists her father as an Anthony Dunleavy a deceased taxi driver so i would assume she knew her father (she knew his occupation) although she would never speak of him.

My gran said her mother Annie died when she was young and was buried in a churchyard where the church was on a hill and could be seen from Derry city, do you know if this could be Saint Eugenes?

If an illegitimate child is being registered and when asked for the Father's name .......she may have given the name but when he was not present it was crossed out.

He would of had to have been present to acknowledge he was the Father.

The crossed out Dunleavy is in the mothers name column under her name, there is nothing in the fathers name box.  This is why im a bit confused as it is almost like it was a previous name of hers  ???

Your post has a * and a 1 after Dunleavy- is that on the actual certificate? if so there should be a note to correspond with that correction.

Yes thats on the copy i have from GRO, perhaps the cross symbol is the note that corresponds?

Do you think its worth contacting GRO and asking if there were any more notes?

ive just found on the LDS pilot site a Mary Josphine Dunleavy born the same quarter and has the same page number and volume number.

Am i to assume that this is the same person as my Mary Josphine Murphy? If this is so does it mean that Marys parents were not married? I know she used Murphy as her surname.

Many Thanks
