COMPLETED - BIRTH Marriage Death - Richard Leeson, any
« on: Monday 19 April 10 06:24 BST (UK) »
Hi folks, I'm new here and really in need of some help so I hope I've come to the right place.

I've seen another set of Leesons being researched in Northamptonshire but they don't seem to be related to my family of the same name so if anyone could find any birth, marriage or death information on the following people in or around Wappenham, I would be FOREVER grateful:

John Leeson, born 1857 (location unknown), died 5th Feb 1951; married to Helen "Ellen" Gatfield from Hannah, Middlesex. Children Ernest Walter, Sidney/Sydney John, and Dora Nellie.

Richard Leeson, born 1832 (location unknown), died 1914 in Wappenham I think; second wife Charlotte King. (Parents of John Leeson.) First wife unknown.

Richard Leeson, born 1811 (location unknown), died (year and location unknown); married to Mary Jones. Children Richard (above), Elizabeth (1834) and John (1837).

Any information about any of these people from any parish records would be sincerely appreciated.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat.

Before asking for parish lookups you have to be sure which parish the baptisms may have occurred in. The censuses will give you birthplaces. Though some of them lived in Wappenham, none of them were born there.

1871 census RG10 1471 folio 81
Wappenham Northamptonshire
Richard Leeson 39 Head Married Carpenter Paulerspury Northampton
Charlotte Leeson 38 Wife Lacemaker Wappenham Northampton
William Webb Leeson 16 Son Paulspury Northampton
George King 79 Father-in-law Widower Imbecile Wappenham Northampton

William Webb Leeson is in Potterspury on the 1861 census a nephew in the Webb family. So a possible first marriage of Richard might be

Marriages Dec 1853
Leeson  Richard     Potterspury  3b 97
Webb  Elisabeth     Potterspury  3b 97

and second

Emma Gatfield 37 Spinster Upper Teddington Daniel Gatfield Gardener
Both signed marriage by banns
Witneses Henry Pot and Elizabeth Cox

The John Leeson marriage was in 1922 - perhaps there was an impediment or they just never got around to it?

notes on the 1861 Census from same indexes.

I can't even BEGIN to thank you guys enough for this information. And I apologize for my faux pas in not understanding that I needed to know what parish they were baptised in to get the birth information.

Truly, thank you.

To further prevail on your wonderful efforts, folks, can I ask for some clarification?

Is it possible that the Potterspury that Richard and Elisabeth were married in is actually Paulerspury and has been misspelled in the source information?

Thank you!

Hi Sharon,

Just happened to be surfing the net when I stumbled accross your message. My husband is the grandson of Dora Leeson and we live in the cottage bought in circa 1860 by Richard Leeson the 2nd. My husband is the 5th generation to live in the cottage. We have been in contact with Pam in the past and also Arthur's daughter, Sandra.

We assume that you are Syd and Edith's great or great-great grand-daughter, through Dick and Midlred's line?

Having quickly scanned the correspondance - most of it agrees with our own knowledge and research, however we have other family stories and old pictures in Ottawa, when the Canadian contingent first emigrated.

I am myself Canadian (Montreal born) and emigrated to England 14 years ago. I have been living in the 'ancestral home (hovel)' ever since! :)

Let us know what other information you require.

Best wishes. Di.
