Andrew Small & Alice Howarth, Lumsden, Southland

Just recently started looking into my hubby family tree, got back as far as Andrew Small born 1847, he emigrated to New Zealand, in 1870, and settled in Lumsden, Southland, NZ.

He married an Alice Howarth, in 1874, and had 14 children.

I think Andrew's parents were David Small bc 1800 and Margaret Niven bc 1806 both from Perthshire. They also had a large family, 10 that I have found on IGI.  My husband line comes down from their son, Charles born October 1881, who married a Jessie Bridgman in 1911, in Invercargill, NZ

Hi Maureen. In the 1851 census,David and Margaret Small and family were living at Brickhill cottages Dunbarney Perthshire as follows-
David aged 55 Margaret 45, Euphemia 16, John 11, Thomas 9, Alexander 6, Andrew 2 and Peter 8months.Father David was an Aglab bn Erroll Perth
Only one of them I've found so far in 1891 is Alexander age 45 boilermaker, with wife Sophia and stepdaughter Charlotte Stebbing age 22, living in Armley Leeds Yorkshire

Hi again,1861 census,Andrew Small bn Dunbarney,farm servant age 13 with Mary Henderson age 83 and son James age 43 farmer of 25 acres.
Also 1861 David Small 66 aglab widower at Lusty law private house Dron Perthshire with
Alexander 14 and Peter 9(ages slightly out) Jean Bain 73 is the householder.

Thanks for the census info, "my Andrew" emigrated down under  in 1870, I know that his brother Alexander came out also, but havent looked into when & to where as yet. Perhaps more of them came out as well.

Going to get Andrew's wife Alice death cert next pay day, not sure if she is a New Zealander or came out from Scotland also.    Do more hunting after I get more details.

Just got a copy of Alice's death certificate today, she was born in Yorkshire in England, her parents being James Howarth & Elizabeth Howarth, no maiden surname was recorded, and no occupation given for James.

It stated that Alice had been in New Zealand for 70 yrs, and if thats correct she must have been only abt 10 years old, and emigrated with her parents and siblings, it appears that she must have been born around 1857.

Haven't been online for about a month, due to a family bereavement.   

Still unable to track down my "mystery lady Alice".   All avenues seem not to tie in.   Her death cert states she died 28 March 1939, aged 82 yrs,  been in New Zealand for 70 years,  which means she came down under when she was abt 12 yrs old, has to be with her parent / parents which were James Howarth & Elizabeth Howarth ( no maiden name mentioned).   Was married at the young age of 17 to Andrew Small in Queenstown, New Zealand. 

Have sent away to their marriage cert, to see who were the witnesses, and the birth cert of their son Charles Small, b 1881 ( he was my hubbys  grandfather.), to see what other information I can find.

Got Andrew & Alice's marriage cert, appears they married the Magistrates Office in Queenstown, he was a Miner ( in Gold fields), she a servant, there was a C F Small, Carpenter of Beach St, one witness the other a M Canning of queenstown, wife of Edward Canning of same place.  Just wondering if she was employed by the Cannings. 

Charles birth cert gives a little more info about her,  she was definitely an Alice Howarth, aged 23  born in East Riding in Yorkshire,  which makes her date of birth 1857.   

I dont think she wants to be found !!   Proving to very elusive
