Hi

I wonder if you would be able to tell me the children and family of Stephen and Elizabeth Kissell.  I think his son might be John Kessell/Kissell( birth ab 1836) who emigrated to NZ and I am a descent of their line.  I think John married Mary Ann Pollar and so interested to see if Elizabeth and Mary Ann may have any connection also if this is correct.

I am also trying to trace William Henry Kissell on another line in my family whose father was Henry Laity but have found no trace of him before his marriage.  I think that he might have changed his name for a time to William Henry Goldsworthy whilst his mother Mary was married to Joseph Goldsworthy but changed it once Joseph died.

Any information you are able to share would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Debbie Fahey - nee Kissell

Stephen and Elizabeths children would appear to be :

1821 Stephen
1827 Thomas
1830 Mary Ann
1833 Caroline
1835 John
1837 James

The last four children were baptised en masse on a Wesleyan Circuit, Truro in 1837. You can see the entries for yourself on the IGI index.

John Kessell and Mary Ann Pollard married Chacewater 1859. Entry on Cornwall OPC database shows that John's father was named Stephen, so could be the right John you are looking for.

I can find two children for them :

1857 Chacewater  Mary Jane
1862 Mithian          Caroline.

Hi Debbie,
When did John and Mary Ann emigrate to NZ and what Children did they take with them?

There is another JOHN/Mary Ann Kessell in the 1861 Census with Children;
John Alfred 8
Mary Jane 1
RG9/1561/18/29

The Marriage Fizzy found is correct though for your John.

Re his father being Henry Laity.

Henry Laity blacksmith was "married" to Elizabeth Kessel born Paul 1812. They had James 1832, Catherine Kessel 1836 and Mary 1841.

Mary Kessel who went on to be Mary Goldsworthy was born 1797 Paul to parents William and Catherine. There doesnt appear to  be a bap for Elizabeth Kessel but I bet that Elizabeth and Mary were sisters, as Elizabeth named a child Catherine Kessel Laity  So (poss) Henry had an "affair" with sister Mary and they had William Henry Kessel.

Joseph Goldsworthy had been married to Mary Winn in 1821. They had their last child Alfred in 1836 and she died in 1841. Joseph then "married" Mary Kessel. Joseph died in 1850. Confusing with the two Marys but this is why when you look up Joseph and Mary in 1841 there is no William with them. The Mary in 1851 widow of Joseph Goldsworthy is Mary Kessel and William is with her.

Hope this makes some kind of sense and gives a poss explanation.
