finding death/burial records
« on: Sunday 18 April 10 22:14 BST (UK) »
My family tree is filling up nicely  :)
however I seem to have quite a few entries where I have found birth details, sometimes even baptism or marriage details but am struggling with dates of death. Most are Liverpool all are Lancashire but it seems much of Liverpool hasn't been transcribed on Lancashire BMD.
What does anyone suggest about tracing people at the end of their lives? I have traced some and even managed to find and visit some graves but feel I must be missing some resources somewhere ???

If you're still in the timescale for civil registration then try freebmd.

It's much more difficult finding deaths/burials as there's no rule of thumb for when people die.  Baptisms and marriages you can have a reasonable guess at but not deaths.

Again, if you're still working with census returns then you can narrow the time down to a 10 year period when they 'disappear' but be careful as sometimes they can reappear ten years further on  ::)

yes I've been caught out like that!
sometimes I've dropped lucky with a match, easier with less common names but with the more common ones I'm really struggling and it would be too expensive to send for certs for all possible matches
Thanks  :)

Ancestry have now indexed all deaths up to 2005 but you require a subscription for that facility

FindMyPast have the full GRO index online - again by subscription

The GRO index is available for free at your nearest main library

GRO index from 1837 to the mid - 1860's does not show the age at death so if  you are searching for a fairly common surname - it can be difficult narrowing the search

From the late 1860's - the ages are shown alongside the entry

As Christine says - you need to ensure they are not on the next census and then search that 10yrs period in between

If it's any consolation I still have a few who are walking this earth aged 250 and more!

Well, perhaps not but my records say they are  ;D

Best resource is on here  ;D ;D ;D  If you post any you are stuck on, there is bound to be someone on here who can find them. They rarely fail.

You'll have a better chance of success if you post your queries on the relevant counties boards.  There's more local knowledge available there.
