Wow, that is amazing!! I spent HOURS of trawling through super slow satelitte broadband web pages, looking under the name of WILES.

So it looks like the surname may have really been WILDS and not WILES, as it is today. Possibly no relation at all to the WILES family Clunes then.

Thanks again, I now have something to follow up on and not a dead end any more!!

Does it say on the marriage cetificate of Charles William WILES and Rose RODWELL whether Charles's father James was living or deceased in 1900?

FreeBMD shows the birth of a James WILES Jun qr 1838 registered Portsea Isalnd (Portsmouth), and onther James WILES reg Mar qr 1871 at Portsea - obviously not your chap.

Another website gives a ref for a James WILES, parents Griffin Fletcher WILES and Mary Ann WILES registered in Middlesex.  Unfortunately my subscription does not allow me access to any further info for this record but maybe someone else.........?

Well, the parental marriage was in 1850 at St Pancras .... on Christmas Day- according to IGI -(it was free then I believe) (vol 1 pg 355 free bmd confirms)

One hopes that the contributor to the site which  Judith mentions has good creditial information that JAMES was the son of this couple.
