Need help with a drowning mystery - Newspaper Look-up ?
« on: Saturday 17 April 10 04:39 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I'm new here. ;D

I have a wee family mystery I would love help solving.
I'm in Belfast so I can't get to the newspaper archives.

My Great great uncle William Holliday was found floating in the Forth & Clyde, near Castle Street, 27th Nov 1918.
Last seen when the end of the war was announced.
Death entry is just listed as drowning.

He was a Newsagent/Tobaccanist. So, I was wondering if he was maybe robbed of his takings & dumped in the water ?
or was he just partying with the rest of the city & fell in drunk!

It must have made the papers?
Any help or suggestions would be great.
thanks!

~j

Have you downloaded his death record from SP?

Was there an RCE with it?

Yes, I have his death entry & the RCE.
They both just say he drowned. RCE added that he hadn't been seen for 2 weeks.

I suppose there wasn't much in the way of forensic investigation back then !

can you give more information - Castle Street in Glasgow is about a mile from the River Clyde - the only other Castle street I know of near the river Clyde is Castle Street, Dumbarton about 15 miles from Glasgow.

What is the registration district on the certificates you have ?
KELLY (Glasgow), DUNLOP (Ireland, Glasgow), PATERSON (Coatbridge), PATTERSON (Midlothian, Berwickshire), YOUNG (Eastwood), MUIR (Kilmarnock) CAMERON (Stirlingshire, Glasgow, Angus)

Sorry - it's in St. Rollox. The Forth & Clyde!

Castle Street is just north of Glasgow Royal Infirmary & runs over the Forth & Clyde. I've added a map.

I don't know where his shop was, but he lived nearby in Taylor Street just off Cathedral Street on Google maps.

Hi

I can't help you with a look up...I'm in australia ;D

However, have you tried the Mitchell Library glasgow ??? You can search the online catalogue

I just entered newspapers and quite a few came up. If that doesn't work why not try

contacting them direct and explain that it's impossible for you to search in person.

Worth a try
