New Town Barton St Mary
« on: Friday 16 April 10 09:09 BST (UK) »
I am visiting Gloucestershire from New Zealand in July.  I have found my Merritt family in the 1841 census living at New Town, Barton St Mary.  I am hoping that the local parish church records may reveal the parents marriage.  Is the church St Mary's and where are the records kept.

Names are  Thomas Merritt who married Sarah Benfield in about 1820

Thank you Valerie Martin

Valerie,

Whenever I do not know the location of somewhere I use the parish locator free programme Parloc - get it from http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/parlocdl.html

I've just looked for Barton, St Mary and found a parish with that name in North Yorkshire - obviously not the right place.

Can you be more specific about the location you give please?

Regards

Chas

P.S.  There was an area of Gloucester named Newtown just a few hundred yards from where I was born but I've never heard the area called that. It's next to Tredworth I knew well.  Is that where you ask of?   Chas

Valerie,

Managed to get a look at the 1841 via my wife's computer; did not look very closely but if you should have given Newent, (there's a Thomas Merritt there) you might get some help from a Forest of Dean site.

Have a look through the Resources Messages Index for possible links.

Regards

Chas

P.S.  There a TM in Newent's extracted church data - see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(N-Z).htm#N

My ancestors were from Newtown Barton St Mary - it is the Tredworth area of Gloucester. Records are at the Gloucestershire Archives and also the Gloucestershire Family History Society - which is on the same site will probably be of help. Both have websites.

Valerie,

So there you have it, but I'm not sure what the name of the parish church was.  St Paul's church (my home parish) is quite close to Newtown but did not seen very ancient when I went to its Sunday school.   Then a few tens of yards further away, there's a St James's church shown on an old map - see one at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html  - you will find it fascinating.

Later censuses give the ecclesiastical parish names but I do not remember when that info. started.

Regards

Chas

P.S.  For the map, select Maps and enter Gloucester.  When the map is on the screen pan south until St Paul's church is centre screen.  Newtown is just a little to the east.

Thank you so much for the help.   I should clarify that the New Town referred to was where the street name usually appears in the 1841 census.  ie  'name of Street, Place or road' was New Town (no number)

I have taken it all on board and will get on with further research when I am in the UK.  Volcano permitting!!

Hi Valerie,

I have no way of knowing how old you posting is, so I hope it reaches you.  I believe you and I are researching the same family, so thank you for giving me Sarah's last name.  I am a direct descendant of James MERRETT the son of Thomas & Sarah, so I'd really appreciate it if you got in touch with me.  I live in Canada and my e-Mail address is E-mail address removed as per rootschat policy.  Please use the Private message system
