Hi Lucia
I would dearly love a photo of 6 Seagate as an ancestor (Margaret Scott Steel (nee Gordon) lived there in 1861.  Before that she was in Castle Street but no number is given.  I've looked at Seagate on a friend's Google Earth program but would like a photo.  I'm new at this so not sure how photos are transmitted but I guess I'll find out!
Thanks for your offer to help
Ann

Hello,

I am back in Montrose at the weekend so I'll see what I can do. I can post the photo on here or send you it in an email. I will be in touch soon when I am able to get the photo.  :)

If anyone can lookup some information about my great great great grandfather, I would really appreciate it!!!!!!  I am looking for William Stuart Douglass.  The only thing I know is that he was either born in 1779 or 1799 in Montrose.  I know he came to the U.S. in 1824 and he was some type of minister.  That is all I know about him.  Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!

Hello,
What sort of information are you looking for and what do you know so far? Was he a minister in Montrose? Looking through list of previous ministers at Auld Kirk, there is no mention of a William Stuart Douglass.

I am looking for the names of his parents or grandparents.  Actually, any information would help.  William Stuart Douglass left Scotland when he was 23 or 24.  I am curious as to why he left and who his parents and grandparents were.  So I am at ground zero right now.  Anything will be a step in the right direction.  Thank you!!!!!

Hi Lucia
For those of us overseas what a treat to have someone local that might be able to discover some details.  When I was in Montrose a couple of years ago I visited the local museum that was filled with interesting artifacts.  One was this example of Dryleys pottery that was donated by a Mr. Ingram in 1980.  Due to privacy, which  I completely understand, they were not able to give me any information about Mr. Ingram or the donation.  I wondered how he came to be in possession of the pottery as the name on the bowl is the link for me.  It might be a long-shot but in Arbroath, in 1861, a widow Jessie Dunbar was living with her two children and working in the flax mill.  It is not clear to me how someone would have their name inscribed on pottery or if it was only available to the wealthy.  This she was not, so the inscribed Mrs. J Dunbar might only be a coincidence.  I don't imagine that Mr Ingram is still alive but am wondering if there is any way I could find further information on this piece or on the naming conventions on Dryley pottery.  Regards, Keith.

Dear Keith,

That is really interesting. I remember looking at that bowl on visits to the museum and wondering myself who Mrs Dunbar could be. I can't say I know a lot about Dryleys Pottery. They used to discard some of the pottery on the sands near the basin so it's still possible to find fragments of it. I have to confess to knowing about as much as you do. I have an idea though. You could contact the Montrose Society and/or local historian Forbes Inglis, who is very helpful on local history. This has piqued my curiosity a bit as I have found another one here: http://nms.scran.ac.uk/database/results.php?field=who&searchterm=%22Dryleys+Pottery+%3F%22&searchdb=scran. It would be interesting to find out something about who these people were.

I hope I can help but I'm not sure how. Where have you looked so far? I've noticed that there's nothing on the IGI but I'm not up to date with what kind of parish records for Montrose are available there.

I will definitely have a look when I can as I have a bit of a backlog at the moment but I will get round to it eventually  :) It won't take long to look them up anyway. But I should let you know that there might not be a great deal of information in the entries as I have noticed this when searching for the other one. Do you know where these people are buried? If you are looking for graves and have specific enough information then I should be able to have a look for you.
