I couldnt find Benjamin in 1851 census either but I only had a quick look. Martha wasnt there either. ???

Yes I figured similar to you with the census in 1841.

Thanks for looking.

When James came to Australia he became an Auctioneer - far cry from Hosier sales man or Merchant in England wasnt it?

Got to go pick up children from school camp back later.  ;D Ted

good morning all....good work Suz....
what do you think of this Ted / Suz
can`t find a babtism for Martha OR the marriage of William James (Marthas dad) around Liverpool /Lancs

very cleverly Martha names her son after her dads name  William James Farley..who Ted says was born in Lyonshall,Herefordshire..........so I am leaning towards Martha / William coming from Lyonshall and Martha went "home" to have William James..and also the first born Martha Ann Farley b 1849 is not on Lan-opc either....what do you both think ?....are we looking for the James family in Lyonshall,Herefordshire for a census return ???.1841 / 1851 ...allan

I looked at 1841 herefordshire -then looked Lancashire -then looked at all James b out of county they were living in - didn't find what I considered to be a match

Just thought never looked in Wales

I thought with Martha's father being an excise officer they could be living anywhere on the coast near a port!!

I have 2 possiblities for Martha James in 1841

One in Chester as a female servent living with a gameskeeper and his wife

Martha James
Age: 20
Where born: Cheshire, England
St Mary On The Hill
Mart Rowarth 60 Gamekeeper
Elizabeth Rowarth 30
Martha James 20 FS

and the other in Liverpool living with a William James who is five years older than her (but we must remember the strange ages in 41 census) and looks to have a job as a Mariner.

Martha James, 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1821
Pall Mall is the address

Other people in house
Elizth Bunins 12
Wm James 25 Mariner
Martha James 20

Now could the William she is with be a husband or a brother - spose we will never know which is the right one.

I had another look at Martha Ann's death cert and it has her birth place as Liverpool. Her husband registered the death so it might not be correct.

Anyway back to Liverpool archives to see if I can find her.

I think its a brother too (just trying to keep mind open) - never found any other name used for her except James and Farley.

But guess what I just found - might be the reason they came to Australia

http://books.google.com.au/books?id=L04wAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA94&lpg=PA94&dq=james+farley+merchant+liverpool&source=bl&ots=qPPC_OPZW3&sig=W-JS6cmKG7YqbFltLOvj1kbAtP0&hl=en&ei=hDXJS4GHPJDOsgOfqsT3AQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBAQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=james%20farley%20merchant%20liverpool&f=false

It reads James Farley, Lacemaker and Hosier, dealer and chapman ....... etc. BANKRUPTSY

Now to find the date of the book "The Jurist" mmmmmmm make sure it really is himEdited: year of book is 1851

in the 1851 census James Farley has his place of birth as LYONSHALL, HEREFORDSHIRE.....
so it was Mary`s in laws she went to to have the baby ...NOT the James family.....allan :-[
