Martha James, Northwich
« on: Thursday 15 April 10 08:58 BST (UK) »
Hi I'm hoping someone can help me,

Im looking for Martha James born approx 1825 in Northwich, Cheshire.

I know she came to Australia with ther husband James Farley and their children in 1860, and I know a lot about her life in Australia, but I know nothing about her life in England other than the information I found in the 1851 census.

I hope someone can help me find a baptism and the names of her parents.

Thank you in advance,  ;D Ted

on www.lan-opc.org.uk  .........Lancashire parishes online
marriage 6th April 1849 at St Catherine ,Liverpool
James Farley -Hosier -batchelor of Paradise street
Martha James Spinster of Paradise street
grooms father James Farley -Farmer
brides father William James -Excise Officer
witness -Robert Mackay and Ann McFarlane
married by James North

lucky you Ted........not all church records are online....so....now you need to look for a marriage of
James Farley about 1820 in Liverpool -----------and William James about 1820 in Northwich area

James Farley married Hannah Pendlebury 11 august 1817 at St Nicholas, Liverpool....not necessarily your James Farley...BUT ....it`s the only Liverpool marriage for the father of your James Farley so you cannot dismiss it...keep it on record....
sorry can`t find the babtism of Martha or the marriage of William James......good luck....allan :)

Hiya Ted
it would seem within 2 years that James had his own business as a merchant
Mary Farley born 31st Dec 1850
babtised 9th March 1851 at Mount Pleasant Chapel ,Liverpool
child of James Farley and Martha (formerly James)
fathers occupation - merchant
babtised by Robert Newton

NO other babtisms up to 1869...I put in a 20 yr search.....so did they come over to Aus with just one child or did they move from Liverpool....my guess as a merchant he would have been doing well in a busy port like Liverpool and went to Aus with one child....do you know how many children they came over with exactly and their names ???..
for the record -Paradise Street where they both lived at their marriage and Mount Pleasant where Mary was babtised are smack bang in the middle of Liverpool City Centre.....a VERY busy place in 1850........allan ;)
just thought on....if William James is an EXCISE officer at Marthas Marriage, he was a Customs officer on Liverpool docks...it gives Marthas address as Paradise St....try and find William James on the 1851 census as an Excise officer and you should get his family...and his wifes christian name....that will make it easier to find Williams marriage....allan

Wow Allan, You have done so much work for me thank you.

Martha and James came to Australia on the Marco Polo in 1860 with 5 children.

Martha Ann b 1849
Mary b 1850
William James b 1853
Alice Maud b 1855
Henry Charles b 1859

I also know that James was born in Lyonshall, Herefordshire. I have his baptism from IGI dated 13 Marc 1824.

I also have the family on the 1851 census with Mary and Martha Class:  HO107; Piece:  2182; Folio:  267; Page:  57;

Thanks Suz, I think that is him too. I found it about a year ago and wondered why he at 16 was head of the household when Ellen and Mary were 20.

But recently I looked at the original and reallized its a transcription error and he's with Benjamin and Marth Hobson.

They are in Paradise St too as you so wonderfully point out. Thank you.

Although from the 1851 census I thought James' job was a Horse Hay Man but I think it is Hosier ...... Man now that Ive had a better look.

So thank you again for bringing it to my attention. I wonder who Benjamin and Martha are - he obviously trained for his job with Benjamin.

Wonder if I can find Benjamin and Martha in 1851.

I had a look for benjamin in 1851 -but didn't find him

may be worth looking in directories??

the 1841 census has 1 line after benjamin and Martha and then the other 4 household members
This signifies that the ones after the single line live in the same dwelling but separate to the main family (e.g. servants, lodgers, apprentices

Then there is a double line which signifies end of household

also -re Ellen and Mary being 20 -don't forget ages of adults were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in 1841 census so they could be 20-24 yrs old
