A puzzle, Horton or Starford in Darlington

Hello All,

I've been trying to sort out a bit of a problem but only succeeded in uncovering a bigger puzzle, so any help with solving it would be appreciated as I no longer have my access to Ancestry.

I have the 1871 and 1881 census pages for the family of John Horton born c1840 Kinver, Staffs, and wife Sarah born c1842 in either Galloway, Scotland or Burslem, Staffs (different census details).
In 1881 Sarah is head of family where occupation states "wife of John Horton (now absent)".

I couldn't find John in 1881, nor could I find the family in 1891, so assumed they might have emmigrated and left it there. Coming back to it, I found by chance that in 1891 there is a Henry Starford at Darlington born c1880 with an alternate surname added of Horton, and he matches the youngest child in 1881. I then found Arthur c1872 and George c1875 were also Starford, and they match the Horton family.

If anyone can find the parents John and Sarah Horton after 1881, and the census entries for the Starford children in 1891, then I'd be very grateful.

Hi Pam,

Thanks very much for all these details, I really appreciate the time and effort you have given to it.

It looks like there will be quite a lot of sorting out to do and unfortunately I won't be able to get round to it until later. At first glance, I think there may be two different lines of Horton involved, with those at Ramshaw/Evenwood being separate.

Fleede Elizabeth W Clemmet who married Charles Arthur Horton is a distant rellie of mine, I think I picked up a copy of their marriage awhile ago at Darlo library so i'll dig it out & post the details.

I don't think Charles is part of my Horton lot but I'm hoping to get some time off for good behaviour and pop to the library tomorrow.

I did get a copy so here's the info

New Shildon married 21/7/1894

Charles Arthur Horton & Fleede Elizabeth Ward Clemmett both of full age & living at New Shildon.  CAH a miner the son of John Horton a miner manager (print is abit poor but i'm fairly sure of that occupation).

The 2 witnesses are Clemmett's.
