Hi

I've just Googled and there does appear to be a Bow in Essex which didn't show up when I tried it previously

hi, yes i have him as owning a beerhouse in the 1851 census..it was strange as it shows him only living with one son on this census.  he doesn't seem to have any parents. can't find them anywhere  :D

Birthplace changes again in 1861 - Chelmsford

Looks like wife Mary was away from home with the other sons in 1851 but I can't find an entry for her

Nothing on the IGI but somebody may have access to local transcriptions

Hi,

Reading Shatford/Shotford it didn't look right and I wondered if it should be Stratford, so out of curiosity I did a Google map search.  I found one Shotford but in Norfolk, a search on Shatford came back with a question, "did you mean Stratford?"

Stratford in 1851 would probably still have been part of Essex as I believe was Bow and they are none too far from each other.

Looking at it from a spelling perspective, Shalford, Essex might be a possibility.

I read these posts on an off chance because of the name Thurston.  they must be a difficult lot the Thurstons, my wife's ancestor Mary Ann Thurston was baptised in 1842 in Holywell cum Needingworth, Hunts, she then disappears and surfaces in West Ham (then in Essex) where she marries George Turner in 1865.

Her father died a few months before she was born and her mother remarried, even that new family disappear, weird, maybe they were nomads  ;D

Regards.

Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?
