Sumners of Nottingham
« on: Tuesday 13 April 10 22:01 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I am tracing a Sumners line at present that has taken me to Bradford then back to Nottingham. the last 100% info I have is John Sumners marries Mary Wright 26th Nov 1832 in Cromwell Nottingham.
Can any one help with any information about Sumners from Nottingham in the late 1700/early 1800s.
I think Johns parents are William and Martha Sumners but the date of 1807 when John is born (IGI) does not tie in with census information!

Not sure where to go next for more information.

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris

That marriage took place by licence and it states his name was John Summers not Sumner.  He was aged 21, bac and was from Cromwell. Mary Wright was also aged 21. spin. and also from Cromwell.

Hi Carol,

Thanks very much for that. If that age is correct then he can not be the John Sumners (summers) christened in 1807 in newark, it would be to early. But then no other possibilities appear on the IGI so not sure what to do next!!

Thanks for your time

Chris

I would be careful with the ages on marriage licenses, especially since in this case they are both recorded as 21. I have an ancestor on whose marriage license both he and his wife were recorded as 21, when in fact they were 41 and 23. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think sometimes when "21" was recorded, it just meant "over 21" - saying they were not a minor.

Hi Chris

Have you tried finding his burial / death which would confirm his year of birth.

Cromwell baptisms aren't on the Notts FHS CD and there is a gap in the IGI 1808 - 1813

Thanks to you both for your help.

This is the kind of information I am unaware of!
I  have ordered his death cert yes. The BMD states he died in 1875 in Bradford aged 64. Therefore if this is correct (and does this definitely have to be right or can there be discrepancies) he was born in 1810/1811. The census's never say where in Nottingham he was born. They just say Nottingham!

So do I need to look through Cromwell's christenings at Nottingham Library or is there another way to check them out?

Thanks again Chris

PS why is there a gap in the IGI? And is that just for Nottingham or country wide?

Hi Chris

The gap in the IGI is for the parish of Cromwell. The Hugh Wallis batch number site has

Baptisms  1750 - 1808 & 1813 - 1849
Marriages 1750 -1808 & 1813 - 1836 & 1848 - 1849

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyNottingham.htm#PageTitle

The records for Cromwell are kept at the Nottingham Records Office. I can check those few missining years for you next time I go, but I wont be going about until somtime in June.  You could try phoning the R.O. to see if they could do a quick search for you.

Hi Chris

There were no Sumners bapts between 1808 - 1813 at Cromwell.

There were two either side of those dates

Cowper Sumner bapt 18 Jan 1807 to John & Ann
Henry Sumner bapt 9 Jan 1813 to John & Ann (joiner)
(IGI has it as 1815)
