Ford or New Haggerston?

On all census's g grandfather born 1855 Ford, Northumberland. Birth certificate (only one of 2 births that match criteria) reads New Haggerston. Since the census return was more than likely oral, would it be probable that ggf would have said Ford in lieu of New Haggerston.  I think I am barking up the wrong tree!

William Douglas, wish it wasn't such a common name lol. I know nothing about him. My g mother his daughter was shipped off to NZ at age 23 and severed all contact with family and NEVER spoke of them.

Oh, I do know via his marriage cert (1884)  that his fathers name was Thomas Douglas and was deceased.

which Regn District is relevant to the New Haggerston PoB ?


FORD would be in the GLENDALE District


On the 1861 census - is he the Grandson shown born in FORD ? Dwelling in LANTON ?

If so, the census has him as c1852, so this may be him ?

Why do you think it would be oral? The enumerator did not fill in the schedule (except for two sections) it was filled in by or on behalf of the head of the family. It is a common myth that a census enumerator knocked on doors and asked who was present, and then wrote down the details, often mis-hearing, or mis-spelling. There may have been isolated examples of that having been done, but this is very rare!
