Dean of Wallingford
« on: Sunday 11 April 10 19:54 BST (UK) »
After many years of plugging away in the Herts/Middx area, I have just established that it looks like I need to start in Wallingford with my DEAN family...  therefore, I have just ordered the relevant CD from the OFHS.....apologies if I should be posting this to the Oxford section; tbh, every family line I have treads borders of countries AND counties, so it can be confusing when establishing resources.

I was just wondering if there was anyone out there with this surname interest in the vicinity?  I am looking for Francis Dean (male) born, possibly around 1762...  His settlement exam in Hertfordshire is very detailed; he states various work situations as well as the fact that he lived with his parents in Wallingford until he was 14 years of age.

On another note, are the earlier dates for the NBI available anywhere online?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have not purchased any version of the NBI because I have been told it is not Mac compatible - if this has changed I'd be happy to know!  I've had good luck elsewhere finding potential villages to research using burial records so I was hoping to do the same in this area...

Many thanks,
Jenna

Hi Jenna,

I have the Wallingford PRs (ex OFHS) and I am unable to find your Francis Dean in any of the records I have; (Wallingford, St. Peter,  St.Mary Le More,  St.Leonard,   or the Baptist Church, Wallingford).
In fact the nearest I could come up with is a George Deane, cutleer, Fish Street Hill, City of London marrying Mary Wells, sp, o.t.p (Walfd St.Mary Le More) by Lic. 4-4-1772.

If you intend buying CDs from the OFHS then as a Mac user I have not had any problems
with any of the CDs I've purchased from them. The same applies to the PRs on cd I bought from the Berks FHS,  although I believe the Burial CD from them is not Mac compatible.
I'm not aware of  NBI being available on line unfortunately.

Hope this helps.

Hi Alan,

Probably should have posted here before I ordered the CD, since you're not seeing any likely looking Deans in the right period, but never mind!  It may come in to good use somewhere along the line, as I'm now wondering why he stated the association with the town.

The settlement exam is really detailed, telling how he lived in Wallingford with his parents until he was 14, then was apprenticed in London, later worked in Henley on Thames, then enlisted for 6 years in the Windsor Foresters before moving to Enfield....he sure was mobile... maybe I'll pick up the paper trail somewhere else along the way!

I have other OFHS CDs, which as you say, work perfectly on a Mac.  I think I'll have to think about getting burial information somehow; until I can visit the area, I'll have to unleash the PC we keep for 'if all else fails, open on this'.

Thanks for your help,

Jenna

The Berkshire Burial Index is in pdf format (just like the Berks FHS PRs) - should be fine on a Mac.

Most of the NBI is online at findmypast - but not Berks, Bucks or Oxon (ie Oxford Diocese) and, no doubt, a few more counties where the data providers have opted not to go with FindMyPast.

I'll get ordering the Berks Burial Index, thanks :-)

The CD from the OFHS arrived today.  As already stated, there are no suitable Dean(e)s in the registers, but, intriguingly, there are a large number of ADEAN(E)s...

Particularly interesting to me is the baptism of one Francis Seaward ADEAN in 1763, s/o Michael & Sarah, at St Mary, W'ford....

Could this be a coincidence or is this my man?  I'm not seeing a marriage or burial for him, which could indictate he left the area, maybe.

If this is the chap I'm after, his parents married in the same parish in 1762 - his mother's maiden name was PITHER.

If anyone has any knowledge of these families, do please give me a shout :-)
